27.3.1. News Bureau

Definition

News Bureau: Manages and coordinates the release of information of all University events to the media.

General Information

Any contact with the media related to events, information, research projects, programs, and other topics must be initiated by staff members in News and Information Services. Please allow a reasonable notice for all stories. For major stories or a series of stories, the News and Information Services staff will develop a public relations plan in consultation with the client and will arrange for any photos or artwork needed to accompany the news releases. Departments are not charged for these services.

Procedure

To initiate media contacts and story ideas, do the following:

  1. Contact the manager of the News Bureau or director of News and Information Services by calling 7-2343 and briefly describe the story idea.

  2. NOTE: The News Bureau will collect pertinent information, complete the news story, disseminate the story, and provide clippings if requested.

If a department is contacted by the media, do the following:

  1. Direct the media to contact the executive director of University Relations by calling 7-2354, if the topic is non-research.
  2. Direct the media to contact the appropriate researcher if the topic is a research story.
