The University Senate of Michigan Technological University

PROPOSAL 24-99

AMENDMENTS TO ACADEMIC POLICIES

The Senate recommends the following changes in academic policy:

1)Grade Reports

Add the following language to the catalog:

Mid-semester grades of "Satisfactory" or "Unsatisfactory" are given to students in 1000 level classes.

2)Repeating a Course

Strike the following language from the catalog:

"Students who wish to repeat the same course more than twice may do so only with the permission of the Dean of Student Affairs and their academic advisors."

Replace with:

"Students who want to repeat the same course more than one time may do so only with the permission of the Dean of Student Affairs and their academic advisor(s)."

3)Drop period

Strike the following language from the catalog:

"From the beginning of the fourth week through the end of the sixth week of a quarter, courses dropped will be indicated by a grade of W on a student's transcript. After the sixth week of a quarter, a student may request a late drop from the Dean of Students office, which will consider only those requests that clearly involve extenuating circumstances beyond a student's control."

Replace with:

"Courses dropped between the beginning of the third week and the end of the sixth week of a semester will be indicated by a grade of W on the transcript. After the sixth week of a semester, a student may request a late drop from the Dean of Students office, which will consider only those requests that clearly involve extenuating circumstances beyond a student's control.

First-year students may drop a course only after first discussing their status with the instructor and then securing approval of the appropriate academic advisor."

The Senate recommends that the Board of Control Policy Manual, section 17.2.8, be amended as follows.

Proposed Version:

17.2.7.2 Academic Probation

Students who are not making satisfactory progress toward a degree are placed on academic probation. Academic probation is a strong warning to students that their scholastic performance is less than that expected by the University. Notices of academic probation are sent to students at the same time grades are sent at the end of the semester. Failure to improve after receiving a probation notice can result in academic dismissal from the University (see below).

A student seeking the baccalaureate degree or associate degree is placed on academic probation when any of the following is true:

A student on academic probation will be removed from probation when all of the following are true:

17.2.7.3 Academic Dismissal

A student is eligible for academic dismissal if the student meets the academic probation criteria for two consecutive semesters, or has zero earned credits in a semester, or has a GPA below 1.00 in a semester. A student receiving a notice of academic dismissal will not be permitted to enroll at the University.

17.2.7.4 Reinstatement

A student dismissed for unsatisfactory academic progress may apply for reinstatement through a written request to the Dean of Student Affairs, after a period of non-enrollment. A student who is reinstated after academic dismissal will be reinstated on academic probation, and shall be considered as having enrolled under the

catalog and curriculum in effect at the time of re-enrollment.

Upon receiving a first notice of academic dismissal, a student must sit out at least one semester, plus a summer. That is, a student dismissed at the end of a fall semester may not re-enroll until the following fall, and a student dismissed at the end of a spring semester may not re-enroll until the following spring semester.

Upon reinstatement, failure to achieve good academic standing or show substantial academic progress by the end of one semester will result in a second dismissal. Upon receiving a second notice of academic dismissal, a student must sit out two semesters, plus a summer. Upon reinstatement after a second dismissal, failure to achieve good academic standing or show substantial academic progress within one semester will result in permanent academic dismissal.
