PROPOSAL 21-96

RECOMMENDATION ON EDUCATIONAL BENEFIT

(Voting Units: Full Senate)

Modify the current benefit of 8 credits of courses for the faculty/staff as follows:

8 units of courses may be taken at MTU by the faculty/staff members each quarter, with the following schedule.

From these 8 credits, 4 or more could be used by the faculty/staff member only. The other 4 credits may be used by a member of the faculty/staff's family.

Proposal Background

The faculty/staff members will have an additional benefit, in that their family can take courses at MTU free of charge.

The spouses or children of the faculty/staff members who have thus accumulated a number of credits at MTU would have an incentive to continue their education at MTU. This can provide an increase in enrollment and additional revenues for the University. Should the family member decide to take more than 4 units per quarter (say 6 units for 2 courses) he/she will pay for the additional credits.

Proposal referred to Fringe Benefits Committee for further review. (May 1, 1996)
