PROPOSAL 13-92

HONORS PROGRAM IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

The Honors Program is designed to provide outstanding undergraduate students in Biological Sciences (SBL) and Medical Technology (SMT) with scientific research experience, and through selective admissions, to recognize exemplary undergraduate performance. Students who successfully complete the Honors Program are recognized at Commencement, having the "Honors in Biological Science" noted on their transcripts, and receive a certificate acknowledging their special accomplishments. It is expected that most students will apply for admission to the program during the spring term of their junior year and will begin their participation in the program that summer or fall term to continue throughout their senior year.

ELIGIBILLITY

To be eligible for admission, a student must be enrolled as a major in Biological Sciences or Medical Technology, must have earned at least 128 course credits (equivalent to third-term junior status), and must have a 3.30 minimum cumulative grade point average in all academic work and a 3.30 in Biological Sciences and in cognate (mathematics, chemistry and physics) courses.

APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION

The application is to take the form of a proposal for undergraduate research to be completed as the content of BL400H Honors Research in Biological Sciences. The proposal will be developed in collaboration with a full-time faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences who will serve as the student's honors research advisor. The applicant will also identify one additional faculty member in biological sciences or another scientific discipline to serve as a reader for the honors project report. The departmental Honors Committee will review applications and admit eligible students whose research project, advisor, and reader are deemed appropriate.

REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF THE HONORS PROGRAM

  1. The student must complete his/her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences or Medical Technology with a 3.30 minimum cumulative grade point average in all academic work and a 3.30 in biological sciences and cognate courses.

  2. The student must complete three quarters of BL400H Honors Research in Biological Sciences, for a total of nine credits. BL400H may be used as free electives but will not count as biological science electives toward Biological Science or Medical Technology B.S. degree requirements and will not be calculated in the departmental GPA required for successful completion of the Honors Program.

  3. The student must complete BL450H Senior Research Seminar during the fall and spring terms, for a total of two credits.

  4. The student must present the results of his/her honors research in both written and seminar formats. The departmental Honors Committee will determine that the student has satisfied the requirements for completion of the program.

Exceptions to the above criteria for eligibility or admission, or to requirements for completion of the program must receive prior approval by the Honors Committee.
