PROPOSAL 5-86

GRADING SYSTEM CHANGE

In response to recent faculty and student surveys where 58% and 71% respectively, of those responding favored a change in our present grading system, the Instructional Policy Committee deemed this topic a matter of concern for the Senate and one worthy of serious further consideration by the committee itself. The committee met internally on many occasions to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of two previously proposed grading systems. A committee member participated in the Omicron Delta Kappa Campus Forum which discussed the pros and cons of changing the current grading system to either the plus-minus grading system or a plus grading system. The committee met with staff members from the registrar's office and administrative data processing to discuss the costs and the problems associated with the implementation of a new grading system. The committee unanimously concluded that a change in our current grading system was warranted, feasible and desirable.

PROPOSAL:

In an effort to more fairly and accurately define a student's performance in his or her classes, the Senate recommends modification of the present grading system to include the following grades:

A excellent with 4.0 grade points per credit
B+ very good, with 3.5 grade points per credit
B good, with 3.0 grade points per credit
C+ above average, with 2.5 grade points per credit
C average, with 2.0 grade points per credit
D+ below average, with 1.5 grade points per credit
D inferior, with 1.0 grade points per credit
F failure, with 0.0 grade points per credit
