(Voting Units:  Academic)

“Proposal for Bachelor’s Degree Title Change”

Current title: Clinical Laboratory Science

Proposed Title: Medical Laboratory Science

1.  General description and characteristics of program: This proposal is a request to change the title of the current Michigan Technological University Clinical Laboratory Science bachelor’s degree to Medical Laboratory Science in order to reflect the recent change in the name of the primary national certification.

2.  Rationale: Two of the largest and well respected diagnostic laboratory personnel certification agencies have recently merged.  These two agencies are the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) which previously offered a certification called medical technologist, MT(ASCP), and the National Credentialing Agency (NCA) which previously offered a certification called Clinical Laboratory Scientist, CLS(NCA). The current certification reflects the merger, is called medical laboratory scientist and is granted by ASCP as MLS(ASCP).

3.  Discussion of related programs: Not applicable

4.  Curriculum design:  This is an established program and no changes are necessary.

5.  New course descriptions:  No new courses are required.

6.  Additional resources required: None

7.  Accreditation requirements: Not applicable

8.  Planned implementation date:  Fall 2013
