“Proposal to Establish Committees to
Recommend Guidelines for Communication Intensive and Global Learning Content of
Courses”
Background
The General Education requirements
are currently under review. One area identified by the General Education
Council to be addressed in the future is the designation of some class as
Communication Intensive (CI) and as Global Learning (GL). It is suggested that
these designations may be considered for inclusion in the next step of General
Education Reform at the Michigan Technological University. This proposal
establishes two committees to develop recommendations as to what would
constitute a CI and a GL course.
Proposal
The General Education Council will
also establish two new committees:
The Communication Committee will be
responsible for developing definitions and identifying requirements for courses
to meet a Communication Intensive specification if such a specification is to
be requirement and recommending those to the General Education Council. The Committee will consist of at least five
faculty members appointed by the Provost, including at least one faculty member
from the Humanities Department, one from an academic unit representing the
social and behavioral sciences, one from the College of Engineering and one
from other STEM academic units.
The Global Learning Committee will be responsible for developing definitions and
identifying requirements for courses to meet the Global Learning requirement
and recommending those to the General Education Council. The Committee will consist of at least
five faculty members appointed by the Provost, including one instructor of
World Cultures/Global Issues, one faculty from the social and behavioral
sciences, one from the humanities and fine arts, one from the College of
Engineering and one from other STEM academic units.
The General Education Council will
be responsible for developing definitions and identifying requirements for
courses to satisfy a Capstone requirement.
