PROPOSAL 9-11

“PROPOSAL TO CHANGE DEGREE TITLE”

Current title: Communication and Culture Studies with a Concentration in Human Interactions and Global Contexts

Proposed Title Change: Communication, Culture, and Media with a Concentration in Language and Diversity

1.      General description and characteristics: The proposal is to add the term “Media” to the primary title of the degree program and change the Concentration title to “Language and Diversity.”

2.      Rationale:

a.       Media is an integral part of the degree program but has not been represented in the title; hence Communication, Culture, and Media better represents the program.

b.      The original Concentration title is unwieldy and not readily recognizable. Changing this title to “Language and Diversity” better represents the focus of the Concentration and will give graduates a degree title that is more readily understood by potential employers and graduate programs.

3.      Related programs: Not relevant.

4.      Curriculum design: This is an existing program that already requires media coursework.

5.      New course descriptions: Not relevant.

6.      Additional resources: Requires no additional resources.

7.      Accreditation requirements: No additional accreditation requirements.

8.      Planned implementation date: The proposed changes will be implemented in the 2011-2012 academic year.

Introduced to Senate: 19 January 2011
