The University Senate of Michigan Technological University

Proposal 25-10

(Voting Units:  Academic)

APPROVAL OF

"PROCEDURES TO PREPARE AND SUBMIT A THESIS OR DISSERTATION TO MICHIGAN TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY’S GRADUATE SCHOOL"

1. Proposal

The faculty approves the document "Procedures to Prepare and Submit a Thesis or Dissertation to Michigan Technological University's Graduate School".  These Procedures may be modified by policy established by the Graduate School for this purpose.

2. Background for Proposal

·    Sept 2007: The Graduate Dean formed a committee of graduate faculty, graduate students, and graduate school staff with a charge to evaluate, revise, and update the procedures for preparation and submission of a thesis or dissertation.

·    Oct 2008:  The committee's draft of procedures was forwarded to the Dean of the Graduate School.

·    Dec 2008:  A revised draft was sent to the Graduate Faculty Council.

·    Oct 2009:   After further revisions, a draft was approved by the Graduate Faculty Council and the Graduate Student Council.

·    March 2010:  The approved draft was received by the Curricular Policy Committee of the Senate.

The Committee decided it was inappropriate to submit the entire 52-page document as a Senate proposal.  However, because the Procedures are new, they should be approved by the Senate.  Adopting this proposal will accomplish this.

The Curricular Policy Committee recognizes that these Procedures will require modification with experience and new requirements.  The Graduate School has in place policy for orderly alteration as necessary.
