The University Senate of Michigan Technological University

Proposal 10-10

(Voting Units:  Academic)

“ADDITIONAL BACCALAUREATE DEGREES”

(Amendment of Proposal 8-08: Second Baccalaureate Degrees)

Background

Proposal 8-08, Second Baccalaureate Degree, established policy and procedures enabling a student who has earned a baccalaureate degree at Michigan Tech to earn a second baccalaureate degree.

This amendment clarifies policy and procedures to enable a student to earn more than one additional degree by repeatedly following the guidelines for obtaining a second degree under the previous policy.

The amendments needed to accomplish this require substituting the word "additional" where the word "second" is used in Proposal 8-08, with appropriate alterations for grammar.

Current Policy (with insertion of amending language)

A student enrolled at Michigan Technological University who is currently pursuing (or already has) a Baccalaureate degree or degrees can obtain a second an additional Baccalaureate degree from Michigan Tech.  Students must initiate the process for obtaining a second an additional degree by completing a degree audit with their second additional degree advisor.  A student earning a second an additional Baccalaureate degree is awarded a separate diploma for the degree.

A student enrolled at Michigan Technological University and pursuing a Baccalaureate degree can earn a second an additional Baccalaureate degree or degrees at the same time if they:

  • Satisfy the degree requirements for both each Baccalaureate programs program.

  • Earn at least 32 of the credit hours required for the second each additional degree through Michigan Tech without having applied those credits to any other baccalaureate or minor degree program.  The academic unit offering the second additional degree can allow course substitutions provided that the 32 credit hour minimum is maintained.

An enrolled student who already has earned a Baccalaureate degree (either from Michigan Tech or a college or university accepted by Michigan Tech) can obtain a second an additional baccalaureate degree from Michigan Tech if they:

  • Satisfy the degree requirements for the second additional Baccalaureate program.

  • Earn at least 32 of the credit hours required for the second additional degree through Michigan Tech without having applied those credits to any other baccalaureate or minor degree program.  The academic unit offering the second additional degree can allow course substitutions provided that the 32 credit hour minimum is maintained.
