The University Senate of Michigan Technological University

Proposal Withdrawn by Executive Committee 3/30/06

PROPOSAL 22-06

(Voting Units: Entire Senate)

POLICY GOVERNING USE OF THE TERM “THE UNIVERSITY”

Background

In a recent proposal presented to the University Senate, a paragraph was included which would grant specific powers to arbitrarily change procedures to a body referred to by the term “The University” sometimes extended to “The University and the University Community.” The paragraph was copied from the “Michigan Tech Students Code of Community Conduct.” In this paragraph it is not clear to whom the term “The University” and the “University Community” should apply. In addition various university contributions to the university and public media often use the term “The University” under circumstances where it might be understood to refer to a component of the University such as the Board of Control or the President and his/her administration or the University Senate. The purpose of this proposal is to define clearly the circumstances under which statements can be attributed to “The University” or to “Michigan Technological University.”

policy PROPOSAL

It is proposed that the terms “The University” and “Michigan Technological University” when used to denote a specific collective body be restricted to be used only to define or describe matters that are clearly intended to be attributed to the whole university community and not to any component of that community such as the Board of Control, the President and his/her administration, the University Senate, or the student body.
