PROPOSAL 18-06

(Voting Units: Academic Departments)

DEPARTMENTAL NAME CHANGE FROM

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

TO

DEPARTMENT OF EXERCISE SCIENCE, HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The Department of Physical Education is requesting that their department name be changed to the Department of Exercise Science, Health and Physical Education. The new vision for this department is to go beyond providing a comprehensive package of wellness, fitness, and intramural activities and to offer academic programs that provide a strong scientific basis for students seeking advanced degrees in the health and allied health professions as well as for those seeking practical skills for employment in the health and fitness industry, a rapidly growing employment sector. As first programmatic step in this direction, a new B.S degree in Exercise Science is submitted concurrently. The proposed name change is a more accurate description and representation of the department’s activities and mission. The proposed name change has been endorsed by the Dean of the College of Sciences and Arts, the Provost, and the President.

RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of Control approve the name change from the Department of Physical Education to the Department of Exercise Science, Health and Physical Education.
