SUPERSEDED

PROPOSAL 5-00

CHANGES TO UNIVERSITY SABBATICAL LEAVE POLICY

The current sabbatical leave policy for Michigan Tech faculty is based upon a quarter-system academic calendar. In order to adjust this policy to fit the semester calendar that will go into effect in Fall 2000, the Senate proposes the following changes in the existing policy.

1) Compensation for faculty on sabbatical leaves will be as follows:

Duration of Leave Rate of Pay While on Leave
1 Semester 100%
2 Semesters 50%

The Senate also proposes the following changes designed to enable the administration and the Senate to better understand the utilization of sabbaticals by MTU faculty.

2) Require that initial requests for sabbatical leave will be made in writing to the individual's immediate supervisor and to the Provost, so that a more comprehensive record of the proportion of requested leaves to actual sabbatical leaves can be accumulated.

3) In consultation with the Provost, the Sabbatical Leave Committee will submit an annual report to the Senate which details sabbatical leave activities. The Senate will undertake periodic review of these reports and investigate additional initiatives to encourage sabbatical leaves as an avenue for faculty professional development.
