Section 24.2. Research Projects

PREVIOUS PAGE NEXT PAGE

24.2.2. Individual Research Effort

Definition

Individual Research: Research generated by the intellectual curiosity of its faculty, staff, and students which the University supports and recognizes. Some individual research is commonly part of one’s professional development.

Principal Investigator (PI): The University employee conducting research.

Policy

University facilities are available (outside of scheduled class and laboratory hours) for individual research activities. Opportunities for externally fundable research differ from field to field, but it is the faculty or staff member’s responsibility to insure that whenever possible, individual research efforts lead to alternative external funding.

Procedure

To use University facilities for personal investigations, do the following:

  1. Send a written request for approval to use the laboratory facility to the department chair or immediate supervisor. Indicate in the request the possible use of which equipment, materials, and supplies.

  2. NOTE: The individual researcher may be subject to reasonable charges for these materials and supplies.

  3. Follow section 24.2.3. Research Proposal Preparation procedures.
