University Women's Club Spring 2007

President's Comments

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Spring is a hectic time on our campus. Faculty and students are breathing a sigh of relief that another school year has been successfully completed. Flowers are beginning to bloom welcoming us to enjoy our great outdoors. We have all chosen to live in this area because we do enjoy the beauty of this special place!

Your University Women's Club is busy reviewing our past successes and planning our calendar for next year. We have recently elected new officers and have many of your colleagues and friends in leadership roles for the Club. The University Women’s Club was formed in 1929 to promote a sense of community for faculty spouses at Michigan Tech. Over the years our club has expanded its membership to include all women. Our mission is to "promote community for women," and in doing so, have a lot of fun!

Enjoy your summer.

Scholarship News

At the University Women's Club Spring meeting held in the Forestry Center , we honored Leanne Nordstrom as our scholarship recipient. Each year our organization presents an endowed scholarship to a deserving female student. This year's scholarship is $1,000 and Leanne seemed most grateful.

In a thank you note to the University Women's Club, Leanne wrote:

I feel honored to have met the criteria set by the University Women's Club and to be the recipient of this scholarship. This act of generosity will have its lasting mark on my life today, tomorrow, and in the future. The price for higher education is peanuts compared to the opportunities it will provide for me; although this scholarship will benefit me immensely as I am the one funding my education at MTU. Thank you again for providing me with this aided funding; most of all thank you for believing in me as a student. Thanks again, Leanne Nordstorm
University Women's Club gave a scholarship to Sarrah Jackson at the spring 2006 meeting. She is the only recipient to write after completing her scholarship year. This is what she had to say:
Dear University Women's Club,

Thank you so much for the scholarship. It has helped me get through the year. I am currently studying mechanical and civil engineering and have one more year left. I am an independent student, so trying to work and go to school has been a challenge. Your scholarship made a huge difference and helped me in so many ways. Thank you so so so so much! Sarrah Jackson

If you would like to contribute to the UWC endowed scholarship fund, you may do so by sending your check to our treasurer, indicating that it is for the scholarship. She will see that it is directed appropriately. As you know, $10.00 of your dues is applied to the scholarship fund, but some members enjoy giving additional support. This is greatly appreciated as it helps our endowment grow faster, enabling the Club to give larger amounts for the scholarship.
