Senate of Michigan Technological University

PROPOSAL 16-95

RECOMMENDATION ON OBSERVANCE OF MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY

The Senate endorses the attached petition statement.

PETITION

Martin Luther King Day was congressionally and constitutionally designated a United States Federal Holiday to be celebrated on the third Monday in January, beginning in 1986 and continuing on the same day each year thereafter. As of this date, there is no official recognition of said designated holiday on the campus of Michigan Technological University.

We the believers of the constitutionality in and of the Martin Luther King federal observance are petitioning the students, University Senate, executive administration, and the MTU Student Governance to recognize and observe Martin Luther King Day on the MTU campus.

We the petitioners suggest that on this third Monday of January, and those third Mondays of January through the twenty-first century, be recognized as a half day observance. This petition requests that all faculty, staff, and student body be relieved of respective charges, duties and classes starting at 2:00 p.m. on said third Monday in order to participate, attend, and observe the programming in respect of Martin Luther King Day.
