Proposal 14-94

Recommendation on Exceptional Student Tuition Rates:
Modification of Board of Control Policy 9.17

1. The current Exceptional Student Tuition Rate Policy must stay in effect for current MTU students and those recruited for the 1994-95 academic year.

2. The changes in policy will go into effect beginning with the Fall Quarter of 1995 or 1996 depending on when it is approved by the Board of Control.

3. The new policy will:

  a) Establish a minimum performance requirement of a 2.50 C.G.P.A. after spring quarter.

  b) Set a maximum time limit of only five years (fifteen quarters) for program eligibility.

  c) Revise the eligibility requirements to:

  1. Include only undergraduate students in the top 15% of their graduating class from all of the 50 United States and Canada.
  2. Revise our alumni program to include only the children of alumni who are MTU graduates (instead of our current policy which requires parents to be dues paying members of our alumni association).
  3. Discontinue our policy of allowing students to become eligible for the ESTR Program by acquiring a 3.25 C.G.P.A. after two full terms at MTU.

  d) Establish the value of an Exceptional Student Award to be the MI resident tuition rate.

Adopted by Senate: March 23, 1994
Program Terminated at the end of Spring Semester 2002
