The Senate of Michigan Technological University

PROPOSAL 8-78

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN LAND SURVEYING

BACKGROUND:

The Forestry Department has requested that the following proposal be considered by the Senate as an Emergency Submission at the December 7, 1977 Senate Meeting. Under Senate Bylaw 6, emergency submissions are proposals which have not been submitted to the Senate Council at least 15 days prior to the meeting in which they are to be presented; they may be submitted from the floor of the Senate provided the Senate, by a majority vote, agrees to hear them.

The proposal is designed to establish a degree program which will qualify students to sit for the entrance examination for Registered Land Surveryor, State of Michigan, as per Rule 32 (1) of the Board of Registration for Land Surveyors. In the past, the Land Surveying Option in the Bachelor of Science in Forestry degree program enabled the graduate to satisfy a portion of the experience requirement for the entrance examination. A recent court ruling had the effect of eliminating the partial satisfaction of experience requirements for the entrance examination by programs such as MTU's Land Surveying Option. Now, only a 4-year degree program in Land Surveying can satisfy the requirement. At present, Ferris State College is the only Michigan institution which has a 4-year program in the field.

The Senate Curricular Policy Committee reviewed a preliminary draft of this proposal on November 16, 1977. The committee voted to recommend adoption of the proposal if certain changes were made and if further coordination with other departments occurred. The present proposal contains the suggested changes and the requested coordination has occurred. The Committee's consideration of the proposal was conducted in accordance with Senate Policy 10-70, Procedures for Developing Significant Changes in the Academic Program.
