PROPOSAL 3-71

THE DISPOSITION OF LAW VIOLATORS




WHEREAS Colleges and Universities across the country have been accused of laxity and permissiveness, and

WHEREAS college faculties have been singled out by the State legislature for punitive budget cuts in cases of student unrest, and

WHEREAS the Michigan Technological University Faculty Senate recognizes the necessity for law enforcement to maintain order the respect four our society, and

WHEREAS the Senate recognizes that the University is part of the State, subject to the enforcement of State and Federal laws, and not a sanctuary from the law, and

WHEREAS the University is not a law enforcement agency of the State,

THE SENATE OF MICHIGAN TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY THEREFORE RECOMMENDS THAT Students who violate state or federal laws while on campus be turned over to the appropriate State or local law enforcement agencies for whatever prosecution that is appropriate.
