PROPOSAL 10-78

PROMOTION POLICY

BACKGROUND:

This proposal is a revision of Senate Proposal 5-78 which was referred to committee by the Senate on December 7, 1977

PROPOSAL:

The Senate requests that the President of the University have prepared annually, a report for the Senate (using the attached form) which summarizes the contributions to the University of those faculty members recommended for promotion by the various departmental promotion committees, whose recommendation was subsequently acted upon either favorably or unfavorably. This report should be prepared by College or School and by rank. In the event that any College or School has less than three faculty recommended for promotion at the Departmental level, in any rank, where publication of this data would perhaps constitute a violation of the privacy of the individual, that College or School may, upon request of those individuals concerned, omit the completion of the report until such time as a minimum of three individuals are included in the same category (See Attached Promotion Profile - Available by Request from the Senate Office).

Adopted by Senate : 25 January 1978
President's Action:
"I am submitting Proposal 10-78 for legal review in order to ensure that the rights of privacy of all individuals will be protected."

April 14, 1978

"Legal review of this proposal has been completed. An analysis of certain departments indicates that even though names are not called for, the data in some cases, would make it obvious to whom we are referring. The information requested, if disclosed, might constitute an invasion of privacy. Such disclosure would be inconsistent with the University's position in salary disclosure. This proposal is not rejected but will be held for action until after the salary issue has been resolved."
