“Proposal for Consistency in Vehicle Registration Fees for Staff/Faculty Parking”

 Department of Engineering Fundamentals (riehlj@mtu.edu)

1. Background

Currently, staff and faculty members must purchase a permit to park a vehicle on campus.  These permits are in the form of a hang-tag, which is transferable to up to four vehicles, excluding anything other than a car.  In order to drive in a motorcycle, moped, or snowmobile, the employee must purchase an additional tag for each vehicle for a nominal fee.

This proposal seeks to modify the current system to remove vehicle discrimination and allow the hangtag permits to include all vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, mopeds, and snowmobiles.

2. Proposal

The current campus community parking permits fee schedule requires a fee of $25/vehicle for staff/faculty to register a motorcycle, moped, or snowmobile for parking on campus.  This fee is reduced to $10 for employees holding a red, green, or black hangtag vehicle permit.  No fee is required to register an additional car up to four cars.

This proposal seeks only to eliminate inconsistent additional parking fees.  Formally, the proposal is as follows:

“Faculty and staff purchasing parking permits may register up to four vehicles per permit.  Any vehicle can be registered as long as it is not on the list of prohibited vehicles found under parking regulations.”

3. Rationale

The current fee structure is meant to tie the parking permit to an individual or group of individuals, not a specific vehicle.  However, this is inconsistently applied when asking employees to pay additional fees for vehicles other than cars when these vehicles are registered to the same person.

This proposed fee structure is meant to be clear, fair, and consistent with the guiding principles put forth by the Transportation Services group at Michigan Tech[i].
