The University Senate of Michigan Technological University

Proposal 7-13
(Voting Units:  Full Senate)

“Tobacco-Free Campus”

Members of the University Administration and others have been working toward a tobacco-free campus for over a year.  Consequently, the University Senate has been asked to review policy 908.1.

Senate Policy 908.1 states:

Smoking is prohibited in all University buildings, including private offices, and at all campus functions, unless accommodations have been made to provide separate ventilation for a designated smoking area.

Residence halls are exempted from this policy, but residents may choose to implement such a policy through their own governance process.

This prohibition shall apply equally to students, faculty, staff, administration, and visitors.

This policy shall take effect on September 1, 1994.

It is proposed that the existing policy be amended to read:

Tobacco use is prohibited on all Michigan Tech property except those areas designated by the Administration.

This prohibition shall apply equally to students, faculty, staff, administration, and visitors.

This policy shall take effect on September 3, 2013 or later at the discretion of the Administration.
