Proposal 25-13
(Voting Units:  Academic)

“Proposal to Amend Senate Policy 701.1”

Background:  Increasingly the nature of research is interdisciplinary. The idea of this modification to Senate Policy 701.1 is that a faculty member will be able to have an official appointment in a second department, but with no funds associated with that appointment. The belief is that this gives the 0% appointment faculty member a deeper involvement in the second department, deeper than an adjunct can have.

Senate Policy 701.1

Tenure Track Appointments

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR: An appointment requiring an earned doctoral or terminal degree or equivalent and the potential for excellence in teaching and research.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR: An appointment requiring an earned doctoral or terminal degree or equivalent and demonstrated quality teaching, recognition for scholarly activities, and service to the university community.

PROFESSOR: An appointment requiring an earned doctoral or terminal degree or equivalent and demonstrated sustained quality teaching, wide recognition for scholarly activities, and substantial service to university and appropriate outside communities.

All tenure-track appointments entail full responsibility for teaching, performing research, advising students, and performing professional and University service.

Zero Percent Dual Appointments (Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor): An appointment at this rank and this percentage is offered to persons not regularly or primarily employed within the academic unit to which the appointment is made. Such individuals--because of training, experience, credentials, and interest--are invited to participate in teaching, research, advising graduate students, and/or other instructional programs of the academic unit offering the appointment. Ordinarily no remuneration is associated with zero percent dual appointments. Appointments will be for up to three years.  Reappointment will be contingent on agreement of both the individual and the participating academic units.

NOTE: No changes in definitions shall be applied detrimentally to individuals employed at MTU as of January 25, 1995.
