The University Senate of Michigan Technological University

Proposal 9-08

(Voting Units:  Full Senate)

"Policy for Program/Department Evaluation"

In an effort to improve and maintain quality programs and academic departments university-wide, each department or school will conduct an evaluation at least every six years. When possible, an accrediting body or external certifying body will conduct the evaluation. If this is not possible, departments or schools will conduct their own evaluations with the assistance of at least two external evaluators from comparable departments or schools at comparable institutions. Additional evaluators may include members of an external Industrial/Advisory Board and University faculty outside the unit that have had significant interactions with the department or program. The evaluation process should at minimum include assessment of the following:

Requirements for admission
Number of students enrolled in programs
Syllabi for courses taught the previous year
Student course evaluations
Degree schedules
Representative samples of student work
Faculty vitae
Faculty and staff workloads
Productivity of faculty in terms of research and publication
Physical facilities
Expenditures and income

A copy of the evaluation should be distributed to the faculty and staff within the unit, the Dean, and the Provost.
