The University Senate of Michigan
Technological University
Proposal 8-08 revised
(Voting Units:
Academic)
SECOND BACCALAUREATE DEGREES
Background
A student
enrolled at Michigan Technological University who is currently pursuing (or
already has) a Baccalaureate degree can obtain a second Baccalaureate degree from Michigan Tech. The current catalog
states the requirements as:
Students
seeking a second bachelor’s degree from Michigan Tech may obtain this degree by
earning a minimum of 25 percent of the credits required for the second degree.
These credits may not duplicate credits used on the primary or prior degree.
The department recommending the candidate for a second degree has the final
authority in determining the necessary requirements.
The proposed policy clarifies
the catalog guidelines, which first appeared in the Michigan Tech catalog of
1991-1993. A minor change is that the
quantity “25 percent of the credits required for the second degree” has been
replaced by a specific amount (32 credits).
Based on a review of past University Senate proposals, it does not appear
as if the Senate has considered a proposal regarding second degrees before.
Note that a
“second degree” is different from a “double major,” which involves earning a
single diploma for two areas of study.
It also differs from a “dual degree,” which is pursued in cooperation
with another university and results in a
degree from both institutions.
Proposed Policy
A student
enrolled at Michigan Technological University who is currently pursuing (or
already has) a Baccalaureate degree can obtain a second Baccalaureate degree from Michigan Tech.
Students must initiate the process for obtaining a second degree
by completing a degree audit with their second degree advisor. A student earning a second Baccalaureate
degree is awarded a separate diploma for the degree.
A student
enrolled at Michigan Technological University and pursuing a Baccalaureate degree can earn a second Baccalaureate
degree at the same time if they:
An enrolled
student who already has earned a Baccalaureate
degree (either from Michigan Tech or a college
or university accepted by Michigan Tech) can
obtain a second baccalaureate degree from Michigan Tech if they:
