Proposal 8-08

(Voting Units:  Academic )

SECOND BACCALAUREATE DEGREES

Background

Guidelines for students seeking a second Baccalaureate degree from Michigan Technological University first appeared in the Michigan Tech catalog of 1991-1993.  The current catalog states:

Students seeking a second bachelor’s degree from Michigan Tech may obtain this degree by earning a minimum of 25 percent of the credits required for the second degree. These credits may not duplicate credits used on the primary or prior degree. The department recommending the candidate for a second degree has the final authority in determining the necessary requirements.

Problems associated with misinterpretation of these guidelines have arisen from time to time.  This proposal clarifies the policy.  The University Senate has not considered a proposal regarding second degrees before.

Proposed Policy

A second baccalaureate degree can be granted to a student who satisfies all coursework requirements for the second degree while enrolled at Michigan Tech. The required primary degree may be a baccalaureate degree that a student is currently pursuing, or has earned from Michigan Tech, or a Baccalaureate degree earned from another college or university that has been accepted by Michigan Tech.

At least 25% of the total credits required for the second degree must be earned through Michigan Tech and cannot have been used to satisfy the requirements of any other baccalaureate or minor degree program.

Students must initiate the process for obtaining a second degree by completing a degree requirement audit with their secondary degree advisor. The academic unit offering the second degree can allow course substitutes provided that the 25% minimum requirement is maintained.

A student earning a second baccalaureate degree is awarded a separate diploma for completing the degree.
