Recommendation
New grade of 'IS' is for courses that do not end by the final grade deadline for a term.

Rationale
There are on-campus courses and Study Abroad/Exchange courses that do not end by the
final grade deadline for the term. Currently either an 'M'issing or possibly a 'P'rogress
grade is assigned. An 'M' indicates grades not submitted by the deadline or withheld for
possible academic dishonesty. A 'P' indicates progress in a course that carries over for
more than 1 semester and is linked with the 'Q' grade indicating inadequate progress in a
course that carries over for more than 1 semester. Some instructors refuse to assign a
'P'rogress grade because they feel it is misleading and may not accurately reflect the
student's status in the course - an assessment has not been made to determine progress
or lack thereof. The adoption of the IS grade provides the appropriate alternative for those
assigning grades in these special situations.
