PROPOSAL 29-04

NEW GRADE OF 'IS' FOR COURSES IN-SESSION AT GRADE DEADLINE

Recommendation
New grade of 'IS' is for courses that do not end by the final grade deadline for a term.

Grade Symbol Description Grade Points per Credit (GPA calc) Academic Credit Repeat Applicable Renewal Indicator Applicable Definition
IS In-Session N/A No No No Temporary grade indicating a course that remains in session and ends after the term's final grade deadline. Non Study Abroad/Exchange grades must be changed by faculty to a valid letter/symbol within 7 days of the grade deadline for the course. Study Abroad/Exchange grades are administratively changed by the Registrar or designee upon receipt of the official transcript.

Rationale
There are on-campus courses and Study Abroad/Exchange courses that do not end by the final grade deadline for the term. Currently either an 'M'issing or possibly a 'P'rogress grade is assigned. An 'M' indicates grades not submitted by the deadline or withheld for possible academic dishonesty. A 'P' indicates progress in a course that carries over for more than 1 semester and is linked with the 'Q' grade indicating inadequate progress in a course that carries over for more than 1 semester. Some instructors refuse to assign a 'P'rogress grade because they feel it is misleading and may not accurately reflect the student's status in the course - an assessment has not been made to determine progress or lack thereof. The adoption of the IS grade provides the appropriate alternative for those assigning grades in these special situations.
