RE: Recommended elimination of Men's and Women's Varsity Tennis Teams.
The APC met with the Tennis Teams in an open forum to discuss the recommended closure of the program. The APC would like to make the following comments.
1. The closure of the program would result in the loss of some students who selected MTU based upon the existence of a tennis team. Currently there are 20 students, ten men and ten women on the MTU Tennis Teams.
2. The tennis team enjoys a long history at MTU spanning some sixty years.
3. There are only ten universities offering accreditated engineering degrees that also have tennis teams.
4. The tennis team assists recruitment by sending some 1040 letters to high schools in the midwest that have tennis programs.
5. During the past year 500 students have been taught tennis by our athletes.
6. The APC believes that closing this program will result in the loss of some students. This loss is to be incurred annually. It would be entirely qualitative to estimate a value of this loss, but if even 20 students (the current team) were to leave, the impact would approach $240,000 per year.*
