5. SETTING OF MEETING DATES
Meeting dates for the 1997-98 academic year were set
for 10 September, 3 December, and 11 March. Only the
September date is fixed.
6. SENATE BUDGET
President Bornhorst reported that in 1996 the Senate
ended the academic year with a deficit of $2-3000 due to
the cost of the Administrative Evaluation distribution costs.
The 1996-97 academic year budget will balance at
approximately $0.00 so that the next president will begin
with no deficit and should have ample funds to consider
new expenses. Bornhorst suggested that the new
President might want to consider a different meeting room
where Senators could bring food. Since Bresnan is no
longer televising the Senate meetings, the video tapes are
not essential and their elimination would permit us to use
a room where Senators could bring food.
7. COMMITTEE REQUESTS/ASSIGNMENTS
President Bornhorst reminded Senators that they
would receive a notice requesting their first, second, and
third choices for serving on a Senate Committee. The
officers would then put together a list of committees for
Senate approval.
8. ELECTION OF SENATE PRESIDENT AND
SECRETARY
President Bornhorst reported that there were three
nominations for President: Glenn Mroz (Forestry & Wood
Products), Bruce Seely (Social Sciences), and Martha Sloan
(Electrical Engineering). There were no further
nominations so nominations were closed.
Election to a Senate office requires a majority. Those eligible to vote are continuing and newly elected Senators.
On the first secret ballot, Mroz received 11 votes, Seely 15, and Sloan 10. On the runoff secret ballot between Mroz and Seely, Seely won 24:12.
Secretary Glime ran for her third term as Secretary unopposed. There were no further nominations from the floor. Glime was asked to leave the room during a voice vote. Glime was re-elected by acclamation and given a round of applause in appreciation.
Carstens MOVED and Lutzke seconded the motion to adjourn. The motion PASSED on voice vote with no dissent. The meeting adjourned at 5:54 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted by Janice M. Glime
Secretary of the Senate
