         THE SENATE OF MICHIGAN TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY

                   Minutes of Meeting No. 259
                         12 June 1996


1. CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL
     President Bornhorst called the Senate Meeting 259 to order at 6:38
p.m. on Wednesday, 12 June 1996, in Room U113 of the Minerals and
Materials Engineering Building. 
     President Bornhorst called roll.  Absent were at-large senators
Evensen, Filer, Glime, Reed, Walck and Whitt, and representatives from
Business and Engineering Administration, Chemical Engineering, Civil and
Environmental Engineering, Forestry and Wood Products, Social Sciences,
Army/Air Force ROTC, Fine Arts, Library, Physical Education, IMP, IWR,
Research/University Relations/Administrative Offices, Human
Resources/Facilities Management, IT, Finance/ Advancement, and Academic
Services/Engineering.  No Liaisons were present.  Only 17 Senators were
present; 26 were needed for a quorum, so the quorum failed and the
meeting was adjourned.
     Visitors were Ellen Horsch (Human Resources) and Eric Obermeyer.

INFORMAL DISCUSSION
    An informal discussion following adjournment, Bornhorst confirmed
that he reiterated to the administration:
  a. that the Senate favors the 2+2 retirement benefit plan with no loss
     of salary, 
  b. that the Senate urges the administration to remain committed to
     faculty and staff salary equity.

     Thayer and Sloan passed out copies of a draft response to Denice
Logan's Gazette letter to the editor.  Ensuing discussion produced no
consensus on whether or not to go forward with a response.

   The discussion concluded around 7:30 p.m.
