Synopsis:
The Senate
(1) set the two required meeting dates for 2008-09 for 17 September and 21 January
(2) elected Martha Sloan President and Marilyn Cooper Secretary of the Senate by acclamation
(3) approved the Senate standing committees for 2008-09.
1. CALL TO
ORDER AND ROLL CALL
President Sloan called the University Senate Meeting 463 to order at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, 16 April 2008, in Room B45 EERC.
Secretary Glime called roll. Absent were at-large Senators Michele Miller and Marilyn Cooper and representatives from Army/Air Force ROTC, Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Geological and Mining Engineering & Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physics, SFRES, Social Sciences, Academic Services A & B, and Advancement. Liaisons in attendance were Lakshmi Krishna (GSC) and Becky Christianson (Staff Council). MEEM, Research, and Auxiliaries currently have no elected representatives.
2. RECOGNITION OF VISITORS
Guests included Lesley Lovett-Doust (Provost) and Bill Kennedy (CTLFD).
3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Hamlin MOVED and Pierce seconded the motion to approve the agenda. The motion to approve PASSED on voice vote with no dissent.
4. Setting of meeting dates
President Sloan announced that the proposed required meeting dates for 2008-09 were 17 September 2008 and 21 January 2009.
L. Davis MOVED and Vable seconded the motion to approve the proposed meeting dates. The motion PASSED on voice vote of the full Senate with no opposition.
5. Election of Senate officers for 2008-2009
Senator Luck announced that the only nominees were Marilyn Cooper for Secretary and Martha Sloan for President.
President Sloan announced that there were no candidates for the position of Vice President, which must be held by a staff member. She invited nominations from the floor. Malette(?) nominated Travis Pierce for Vice President. President Sloan pointed out that Pierce is an alternate and the Vice President must be a Senator. There were no other nominations.
Sloan invited nominations from the floor for Secretary. There were none and the Senate declared Marilyn Cooper to be elected by acclamation.
Vice President Polzien took the gavel and announced that Martha Sloan was the only candidate for President. She called for nominations from the floor. There were none. She called for a motion to approve Sloan as President by acclamation. Christianson Moved and Pierce seconded the motion to declare Sloan President by acclamation. The motion PASSED on voice vote of the full Senate with no dissent. The gavel was returned to Sloan.
6. approval of senate standing committees
President Sloan announced
that not all Senators had been selected yet, but that the Senate could approve
the committees as they had been suggested.
Changes could be made later, if necessary.
Hamlin MOVED and
Vogler seconded the motion to approve the committee assignments as
suggested. The motion PASSED on voice
vote with no opposition.
7. Adjournment
The meeting adjourned at 5:40 pm.
