Chemistry alumna Kim Hilton '91 is bringing science education to new heights by embracing dynamic changes in technology, culture and the learning landscape.

In addition to her job teaching chemistry at Florida SouthWestern State College, Hilton is a STEM education influencer. As Chemical Kim, she utilizes short-form video to demonstrate science, technology, engineering and mathematics concepts to more than 1.5 million followers on TikTok and other social media channels.

Pre-proposals for Fall 2024 Copper Shores Community Health Foundation (CSCHF) Graduate Assistantships are being accepted and are due no later than 4 p.m. May 21 to the Graduate School. Students who best meet the foundation’s criteria will be invited to submit a full application, which will be due on June 25. Instructions on the pre-proposal and information about the full application and evaluation process are found online.

Students are eligible if all of the following criteria are met:

1. Must be a Ph.D. student conducting a research or outreach project that will promote and/or improve the overall health of Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga and Ontonagon communities.
2. Must be two years after starting the graduate program at the time of application.
3. Must not be a prior recipient of a Portage Health Foundation (PHF) or CSCHF Graduate Assistantship.
4. Preference will be given to applicants with long-standing local connections to Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga or Ontonagon county.

Priority will be given to students originally from Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga or Ontonagon counties. Nonresident students and international students are encouraged to apply if their health research is applicable to health needs and job shortages of our local community (obesity research, rural health, medical informatics, drug delivery and lab testing, physical therapy, etc.).

These assistantships are available through the generosity of the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation. They are intended to recognize outstanding Ph.D. talent in health-oriented research areas. Applicants should be a catalyst for promoting and improving the overall health of Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga and Ontonagon communities through one of the following:

• health research and technology development
• health education or preventive and wellness initiatives
• rural health care access, informatics and assessment of care

Students who receive full support through a CSCHF Graduate Assistantship may not accept any other employment. For example, students cannot be fully supported by a CSCHF Graduate Assistantship and accept support as a GTA or GRA.

This Friday (May 10), Michigan Tech's Department of Biological Sciences (BioSci) will be hosting our annual Bioathlon pre-college outreach event. Each year, the department invites local high schools to participate in this single-day, hands-on problem-solving competition to stimulate an interest in biology careers. This year, 24 eager students from six different schools will be participating in the all-day event.

This will be the department's 34th year hosting Bioathlon.

At the annual conference and membership meeting of the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling (IACAC), Tara Brewer, regional admissions manager for Undergraduate Admissions at Michigan Tech, was elected a board director. In this role, she will serve as a representative of all IACAC members for a three-year term.

Additionally, Brewer was awarded IACAC's Molly K. Arnold President’s Service Recognition Award. This award recognizes members with more than five years’ service who have provided strong and consistent leadership.

“It comes as no surprise that Tara’s commitment to IACAC was noticed by the current president of the organization, Paul Welsh, who awarded her the President's Service Award,” stated Chrissy Grotzke, senior associate director of admissions. “Over the last 10 years, Tara has stepped up to co-chair three committees and served on a variety of others. Her passion for the students and families she works with at Michigan Tech, coupled with the connections she has made within our profession, allowed her to secure a chair at the table. I look forward to seeing her contributions and Husky Spirit over these next three years with IACAC.”

Brewer has been a critical part of Michigan Tech’s regional Admissions team since 2009, and a member of IACAC since 2007. Three student-athletes from Michigan Tech's track and field team earned podium finishes on the final day of the GLIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday (May 3).

Sam Lange repeated as runner-up in the men's metric mile while John Paul Norland (men's 800 meters) and Jamie Hendrickson (women's high jump) made the podium for the first time in their careers, finishing second and third respectively.

"I was really proud of the competitive fire shown by our athletes at this meet," head coach Robert Young said."Not everyone had their best day, but it was great to see them strive to give everything they had. Everyone knows when it's a championship meet — it just means a little more and brought that heightened level of focus and drive that the situation requires."

Nancy French (MTRI) served on the organizing committee and gave the opening presentation for a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine workshop held Sept. 13-15, 2023, to identify opportunities to improve measurements and model projections of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from wildland fires and discuss management practices that could be incorporated into current and future action plans.

The report from this workshop, titled "Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Wildland Fires: Toward Improved Monitoring, Modeling, and Management: Proceedings of a Workshop," has just been completed and released by The National Academies Press.

The Keweenaw Report covered Michigan Tech’s receipt of the Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation. The award recognized the efforts of the Department of Social Sciences, Geospatial Research Facility and Michigan Tech Archives toward developing the Keweenaw Time Traveler. MTU announced the award at Michigan Tech News.
