Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Today (May 16) is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). The purpose of GAAD is to get everyone talking, thinking and learning about digital access and inclusion, and the more than 1 billion people with disabilities or impairments.

What is Digital Accessibility?
Digital accessibility refers to the ability of people with disabilities or impairments to independently consume and/or interact with digital applications and content. This includes digital documents, images, presentations, social media, software, audio/video, class materials and websites.

Removing digital barriers can help ensure everyone has access to the digital products and resources that are so important in our daily lives. In fact, you may not realize that you have benefitted from accessible technology. Talk to text, Siri, Alexa, closed captioning, audiobooks and mobile phone gestures are all great examples of how everyone benefits from inclusive and accessible technology.

The Accessible Technology Working Group (ATWG) at Michigan Tech is here to help. To learn more about how to make your digital assets accessible, visit our Training Resources page.

Visit the GAAD website for more information and ideas on how you can get involved.

If you’ve encountered an information and communication technology (ICT) barrier, please let us know by using our Barrier Reporting form.

Lean Belt Certification Levels

Are you or one of your colleagues interested in building skills for solving problems and making improvements in the workplace? The Office of Continuous Improvement provides opportunities for free training and Lean systems certifications based on a belt system similar to how people advance in the martial arts, moving along a path of white, yellow, green and black belt certifications. Each belt level serves as a foundation for the next one.

White Belt
A white belt understands fundamental Lean concepts like flow and waste, can map a simple process, and is ready to actively participate in an improvement event.

Yellow Belt
In addition to white belt knowledge, a yellow belt applies more advanced Lean concepts, like root cause analysis, knows how to develop and execute basic countermeasures, and can recognize improvement opportunities. They’re able to complete straightforward projects on their own.

Green Belt
A green belt pioneers Lean in their units and supports improvement work in other units. They can initiate, co-facilitate and manage Lean kaizen. They’ve developed some expertise in Lean, are trained in soft skills like team dynamics and conflict management, and are able to mentor and teach others.

Black Belt
A black belt is a campuswide leader in our Lean transformation. They have advanced Lean knowledge, skills and abilities. Their experience and unflappable presence enables them to function as a coach or second coach, and they provide kaizen scoping and troubleshooting help to the green belts and others.

To see who has received formal Lean training and achieved belt certifications, visit our Lean Practitioners webpage.
