The Graduate School is assisting graduate students who wish to apply for the National Science Foundation’s (NSF’s) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). Support includes Zoom workshops, a Canvas course and one-on-one writing support.

The upcoming award year solicitation will be available in July at NSF’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program website.

Per the previous year’s solicitation, fellowship recipients earn an annual stipend of $37,000 and a $16,000 cost-of-education allowance. To be eligible, applicants must be a U.S. citizen, national or permanent resident; have never previously applied to GRFP while enrolled in a graduate degree program; have never earned a master’s or professional degree in any field; and have completed no more than one academic year in a graduate degree-granting program. Application deadlines begin in mid-October.

The Graduate School is offering a self-paced online course to support NSF GRFP applicants so they can begin working on applications over the summer. Students who appear to be eligible will be emailed with an invitation to join the course.

The deadline for applications to the Songer Research Award for Human Health has been extended until May 15 at 4 p.m.

The CCHA has announced a three-year media rights agreement with Midco Sports™ Plus, starting with the 2024-25 season. The regular season and Mason Cup quarterfinals, semifinals and championship will be streamed exclusively on Midco Sports Plus on a direct-to-consumer branded digital network called CCHA TV.

CCHA TV will be a one-stop shop for all CCHA digital content and serve as the exclusive streaming home for live and on-demand coverage of the member schools. Fans can expect more than 180 live events to be streamed through CCHA TV on the Midco Sports Plus app each year. CCHA TV will be available for fans to subscribe to this September and will feature new monthly and annual subscription options.

The CCHA will release its upcoming season schedules on Tuesday (May 7).

Tim Havens (CS/ICC/GLRC) and Steve Senczyszyn (GLRC) attended and presented at the SPIE Defense and Commercial Sensing conference, held April 21-25 in National Harbor, Maryland.

Senczyszyn presented “Comparing performance of robot operating system (ROS) mapping algorithms in the presence of degraded or obscured depth sensors.” His co-authors include Havens; Tony Pinar (ECE); Adam Webb (MTRI); ECE undergraduate Mohamed Salem; ECE graduates Elizabeth Donoghue, Shelby Wills and Moira Broestl; and U.S. Army engineer Stanton Price.

Havens presented "Synthetic augmentation methods for object detection in infrared overhead imagery." His co-authors include Ashley Olson (MTRI) and Jonathan Christian and Jason Summers of ARiA.

Dylan Kangas (ECE) presented "Developing robust unmanned surface vehicles with ROS." His co-authors include Havens, Senczyszyn, Pinar, Keven Li (ME-EM), ECE undergraduates Salem and Tyler Ryynanen, U.S. Army engineers Steven Price and Stanton Price, and Stephen Taylor and Timothy Murphy of the U.S. Navy's Naval Surface Warfare Center.

Havens and Olsen are also co-authors of a presentation by Summers and Christian of ARiA titled "Generative EO/IR multi-scale vision transformer for improved object detection."

Sarah Hoy, Rolf Peterson and John Vucetich (all CFRES) were quoted by Michigan News Source in a story about the results of Michigan Tech’s annual Isle Royale Winter Study — the longest-running predator-prey study in the world. The release of the annual report for the 65th winter study was announced by Michigan Tech News on Tuesday (April 30).

Yu Cai (AC/ICC) was mentioned by the Keweenaw Report in a story about the success of CyberHuskies students in spring 2024 National Cyber League individual and team competitions. CyberHuskies is a team of Houghton High School and Houghton Middle School students learning cybersecurity skills from MTU students. The story was picked up from the Computing News Blog.
