1. Teachers Go to School |
Michigan Tech is again hosting seven middle and high school teachers from Michigan and Wisconsin in a six-week Research Experience for Teachers (RET), a program funded by the National Science Foundation, which ends this week.
The teachers will present posters on their research experiences, as well as the development of classroom/laboratory units, from 10 a.m. to noon, Friday, Aug. 17, in Memorial Union Alumni Lounge B.
The teachers are conducting biofuels research projects in engineering and forestry, specifically in the labs of Professor David Shonnard (ChE), Professor Shehkar Joshi (SFRES) and Professor Jeffrey Naber (ME-EM).
The research experiences underway span the entire "Wood-to-Wheels (W2W)" chain, including genetic engineering of poplar trees; conversion of wood chips to biofuel ethanol; and combustion of biofuel in chambers and engines.
Based on the program, teachers are developing classroom instruction units and laboratory exercises to both introduce engineering disciplines and careers to students, as well as to present more advanced science and engineering topics in each of the relevant disciplines (forestry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering).
The program manager from the National Science Foundation, Mary Poats, will also be present at the poster session.
The University community is welcome to attend. For more information, contact David Shonnard at 487-3468 or at drshonna@mtu.edu .
This RET project is conducted in association with the Sustainable Futures Institute and the Department of Cognitive and Learning Sciences. |

3. Reminder: Weight Watchers Changes Campus Meeting |
submitted by Benefits
Weight Watchers is changing the day and time of its weekly campus meeting, effective Thursday, Sept. 6. Here is the new schedule:
New day--Thursday
Weigh-in--7 to 7:15 a.m.
Meeting--7:15 to 7:45 a.m.
Additional weigh-in time after the meeting--7:45 to 8 a.m.
Most meetings will be held in the Memorial Union Peninsula Room (unless otherwise notified).
Weight Watchers has been meeting on campus since May of 2008. The cost is $199 for 20 weeks. This includes all start-up materials, weekly handouts, awards and meeting fees. Staff can use their Tech Fit benefits to help with the cost.
This group will require 15 paid members to begin. The campus meeting is open to staff and faculty, as well as family and friends in the community. Why do it alone? Bring a friend and buddy up. Those who do follow a program with others are more likely to succeed. We hope you can join us.
If you have been considering joining or coming back to the meetings, or if you would just like to learn more about the new plan, join us on Thursday, Sept. 6, in the Peninsula Room.
