2. Teachers Explore the Geology of the UP |
Eighteen middle and high school teachers from across Michigan will explore the geology of the UP during a five-day geology teacher institute, Monday through Friday, July 23-27.
The institute is sponsored by the Center for Science and Environmental Outreach and the Western UP Center for Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education. Funding is provided by the Michigan Space Grant Consortium.
The teachers' field trips in the Keweenaw will include the Hancock lookout, Centennial rock-collecting site, Brockway Mountain, Hunter's Point Cobble Beach, and Horseshoe Harbor stromatolites. They will also visit the Quincy Mine steam hoist and copper mine, Seaman Mineral Museum, Caledonia Mine, Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park, Presque Isle Park, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Tahquamenon Falls State Park.
The week will include examining the lava flows that formed some of the great cliffs of the Keweenaw, studying glacial features, learning about how shorelines form and change and how bedrock is formed. The teachers will also participate in geocaching.
Professor Bill Rose (GMES), Professor and Chair Pat Martin (Social Sciences) and Curator George Robinson (Seaman Mineral Museum) will share their expertise with the teachers, as will GMES PhD students Erika Vye, Carol Engelmann and Emily Gocchis.
After exploring the geological landmarks of the UP, the teachers will discuss ways to bring what they've learned back to their classrooms. |
