1. Board of Control Addresses New Degree, Room and Board, SDC Work
At its regular meeting, the Board of Control approved a new Bachelor of Science in Engineering Management degree, to be offered by the School of Business and Economics. This degree is designed to satisfy the growing needs in industry and the economy for individuals with strong skills in both business and engineering.

Students will take courses in engineering, math and science while completing a comprehensive business curriculum. They will develop a broad and strategic perspective of business, acquire a solid command of the technical fundamentals of engineering, and link their technological skills with their business knowledge through the required senior capstone business development experiences courses.

"Michigan Tech has long been committed to delivering a distinctive and rigorous discovery-based learning experience grounded in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)," said Provost Max Seel. "Combine that with hands-on experience in business, and you have just what students will need to prosper in the new economy."

The Board also approved room-and-board rates for the 2012-13 academic year. With increases ranging from 1.93 to 2.6 percent for Douglass Houghton, McNair and Wadsworth Halls, rates will range from $8,184 to $10,478 with the gold (median) meal plan. There will be no increases in rates for Hillside Place apartments. Rent for student family apartments in Daniell Heights will increase 4.24 to 4.69 percent.

Plans and financing for renovations to the MacInnes Ice Arena and the SDC also received Board approval. The ice plant and rink slab is original and over 40 years old, the Board was told. After a number of attempts to locate and repair the multiple leaks in nearly ten miles of pipe, it was determined that a new system is needed. Several sections of the SDC roof are leaking, and these leaks will cause additional maintenance problems if not addressed at this time. The Board authorized the University to proceed with the renovations, not to exceed $2.35 million, and be funded through general revenue bonds.

The Board also approved a 3 percent salary increase for President Glenn Mroz effective January 1, 2012. “This is in line with our strategic plan to keep the very best people,” said Board Member Terry Wychowski.

Board Chair Marty Richardson reported on a Board retreat held earlier this week to discuss where Michigan Tech should be in 2035 and how the University’s strategic plan can provide the mechanism to achieve those goals.

"The retreat was energizing, and we are looking forward to meeting the challenges that lay ahead," Richardson said. "Although we are experiencing difficult economic times, we are confident that by continuing to follow our strategic plan we will successfully surmount those challenges and come out an even better university."

In other action, the Board:

* Approved an application to the Michigan Coastal Management Program for improvements to the campus waterfront.
* Agreed to grant an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree to Martha Sullivan, an alumna, donor and speaker at the upcoming Spring Commencement.
* Voted to issue resolutions of appreciation to Bill Rose, professor of geological and mining engineering and sciences; Pat Joyce, professor of business and economics; and Sudhakar Pandit, professor of mechanical engineering-engineering mechanics for more than 35 years of service.
* Granted emeritus status to Lee W. Erlebach and Gilbert N. Lewis, Department of Mathematical Sciences; Terry S. Reynolds, Department of Social Sciences; William I. Rose, Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences; and Brian Patrick Joyce, School of Business and Economics.

3. Weigh in on Candidates for the Distinguished Teaching Awards
The Center for Teaching, Learning and Faculty Development (CTLFD) seeks input for its annual Distinguished Teaching Awards, which recognize outstanding contribution to the instructional mission of the University.

Based on over 50,000 student ratings, ten finalists have been identified for the 2012 awards. The selection committee is soliciting comments from students, staff, faculty and alumni to aid in its deliberation.

6. Sam Hoyt Named Academic All-American
by Ian Marks, assistant director, athletic communications and marketing

Women's basketball player Sam Hoyt, a junior, was recently named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Division II Second Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

The Arkansaw, Wis., native has a 3.93 cumulative grade point average in mathematics. She ranks in the top 10 in the GLIAC in six statistical categories: third in 3-pointers made per game (2.6), sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5), seventh in scoring (15.6 ppg) and assists (3.8), eighth in steals (1.9) and ninth in 3-point percentage (.385).

She is the ninth women’s basketball player at Tech to earn the award and the first since Lucy Dernovsek in 2010-11.

7. Computer Science Faculty Candidate Seminar Cancelled
The presentation by Lu Xiao, assistant professor of Information and Media Studies at the University of Western Ontario-London, scheduled for today, has been cancelled.

Xiao is a faculty candidate in the Department of Computer Science.

His presentation, "Design for Reflective Practices in Group Activities,"has been rescheduled for 3 p.m., Friday, March 9, in Rekhi 214.

8. Computer Science, Computer Engineering Faculty Candidate
Timothy Havens, NSF/CRA computing innovation fellow, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Michigan State University, will present a seminar, "Fuzzy Kernel Clustering of Large Scale Biomedical and Bioinformatics Data," at 4:05 p.m., Monday, Feb. 27, in Rekhi G005.

Havens is a faculty candidate in computer science and computer engineering.

10. MSE Hosts Chair Candidate Seminar
Heinz Nakotte, a candidate for chair of the materials science department, will present "Materials Characterization Using Scattering Techniques" at 3 p.m., Monday, Feb. 27, in M&M 610.

Nakotte is the Gardiner Professor and chair of the Engineering Physics Committee, Department of Physics, New Mexico State University. He also is instrument scientist, Single Crystal Diffractometer, Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, Los Alamos National Laboratory.

11. Insiders Guide to College Admissions and Financial Aid
WorkLife Connections announces a Lunch 'n Learn, "Insiders Guide to College Admissions and Financial Aid," which will be held from noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 29, in the Memorial Union Alumni Lounge.

Whether your student is a senior in high school or still has a few years to go before the college search begins, get tips on how to navigate the college admission and financial aid processes.

Speakers will be Allison Carter, director of Admissions, and Bill Roberts, director of Financial Aid.

They will discuss college preparation beginning with the high school freshman year, share tips on financing a college education, and review the merits of transferring to a university versus enrolling as a full-time freshman. The information provided will not be specific to enrolling at Michigan Tech--however, they will share those details if needed.

12. New Funding
Professor Vladimir Tonchev (MATH) has received $35,953 from the National Security Agency, DOD, for the first year of a two-year project, "Combinatorial Designs, Error-Correcting Codes, and Hamada's Conjecture."
