1. Reminder: Curbing Sexual Assault: Responsible Relationship Days |
To help inform the campus and community and fight sexual violence, Michigan Tech is holding a series of events--Responsible Relationship Days--today through Thursday, Sept. 22. Here is a schedule of events, which are open to the public.
Today
7 p.m.--Rape Aggression Defense (RAD), Memorial Union Keweenaw Commons
Open to women only. Officers from Public Safety and Police Services will demonstrate realistic self-defense techniques for women.
Wednesday, Sept. 21
7 p.m.--How to Approach a Lady, Memorial Union Ballroom
This event is hosted by the Society of African American Men and will give advice, such as being confident, holding a conversation, minding your manners and being yourself.
8:30 p.m.--Tradition vs. Team Building: How do YOU know if your rituals are considered hazing?, Wadsworth Hall Annex
This panel discussion is hosted by the sisters of Alpha Delta Alpha and will raise awareness about hazing, bystander behavior and risk management in student organizations.
Thursday, Sept. 22
RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network) Day--More than one million college students nationwide will participate.
11 a.m. to 1 p.m.--Chalking Event, Memorial Union Courtyard (Keweenaw Commons if weather is bad)
Everyone is invited to come and express themselves on the sidewalks. Free coffee coupons will be given to all participants.
6 p.m.--SAVE Demo, Fisher 101
Members of Sexual Aggression and Violence Education (SAVE) will share information (and free pizza) about their group. They’ll also do skits and scenarios to help students stay safe while at Michigan Tech.
All of the events are being organized by Michigan Tech's TERR (Tech Educating for Responsible Relationships), Athletics, Housing and Residential Life and RAINN, as well as Dial Help Inc.

2. Fall Career Fair Interview Rooms Needed |
The Career Fair, promoting full-time, co-op and internship opportunities, will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 27. Career Services needs conference rooms, offices and the like to accommodate as many interview spaces as possible for the large number of companies interviewing.

3. Keweenaw Pride Hosts Annual T-Shirt Giveaway |
Michigan Tech students, staff and faculty are invited to show their support for the GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender) community during the annual "Gay? Fine by Me" T-shirt giveaway.
Over 500 T-shirts with the statement "Gay? Fine by Me." will be handed out free of charge at noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 22. Students may pick up their shirt in Fisher Hall (across from Aftermath Café) or in the main lobby of each residence hall; faculty and staff may get their shirt from the Memorial Union.
Recipients are asked to wear their shirts on the following day, Friday, Sept. 23, and to participate in a group photo at noon in front of the Memorial Union clock tower.
In the event of rain, participants will meet at the J. R. Van Pelt and John and Ruanne Opie Library for the group photo.

4. Weekend Golf Results |
Shortstop Tournament at Portage Lake
Paul Sintkowsi from Hancock beat Carter Hendricks in the final match of the PLGC Shortstop Tournament held this past weekend.
Sintkowski beat Chris Cooney and Mark Huru to reach the finals. Hendricks beat Brad Gustafson and Brett Hauswirth on his way to the final. Winning the consolation title was Brad Gustafson.
First flight winner was Scott Mikesch; runner-up in the first flight was Jack Eberhard; and the consolation winner was Jack Woodall.
Second flight winner was Jim Studebaker; runner-up was Mike Hauswirth; and consolation winner was Ryan Shanahan.
Third flight winner was Mark Gustafson; runner-up was Zach Fredrickson; and consolation winner was Dan Farrell.
Rowe and Willis win Golf Championships
Jane Rowe won her first PLGC Women's Club Championship Sept. 17. Rowe beat Vickie Lobeck by two shots; in third place was Rowe's mother, Mary Mattson.
Rowe also won her first PLGC President's Cup trophy this past weekend.
The President's Cup is an 18-hole stroke play tournament using handicaps. Rowe shot a 75 net to edge Barb Stebler, last year's champion, by two strokes. Vickie Lobeck took third and Mary Mattson was fourth.
In the Men's President's Cup, Keith Willis of Hancock won his second consecutive title. Willis fired a gross score of 92; his net score was 62. Tying for second place were Don Juntunen and John Vaara with net scores of 66.

5. Comedian Maria Bamford Live at the Rozsa |

Laugh until you are rolling in the aisles with comedian Maria Bamford. She takes the Rozsa stage at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30.
According to SF Weekly, "Maria Bamford's comic persona is seated in quietly intense, sweaty-palmed nerurosis." She has been on "The Tonight Show," "Conan O’Brien," "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and the "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson." She is the first female comic to have two half-hour specials on "Comedy Central."
Bamford started her performing arts career in Duluth, Minn., at the age of 11, where she starred in the Chester Park Elementary production of "How the West Was REALLY Won!" She has performed on John Oliver's "New York Stand Up Show," "Premium Blend," "Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn" and "The World Comedy Tour: Melbourne 2003." She also has appeared regularly on "Tim and Eric: Awesome Show" and guest starred on "the Sarah Silverman Program."

9. Physics Colloquium |
Christopher Fuchs will present a physics colloquium, "Charting the Shape of Hilbert Space," at 4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 22, in Fisher 139. Fuchs is the senior researcher at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and the adjunct professor of physics and mathematics at the University of Waterloo.

10. Lunch and Learn on Insurance and Identity Theft |
Benefit Services and VAST will host a Lunch and Learn at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 20, in Alumni Lounge A. Heather Mosher, personal risk advisor from VAST of Marquette will present on various topics related to auto, home and liability insurance, identity theft and rental coverage. All employees are welcome to attend; registration is not required. Bring your lunch, beverages will be provided.

Top News of the Week
Football to Host Indianapolis Saturday
The football team will bring a six-game home winning streak into its game Saturday, Sept. 24, when it hosts Indianapolis at Sherman Field. The No. 19-ranked Huskies suffered their first loss of 2011 by a 27-10 score at No. 13 Wayne State last Saturday. Indianapolis comes into the game riding high after defeating No. 14 Grand Valley State 34-33.
Second Fall Luncheon Thursday
The second of three fall sports luncheons is at noon, Thursday, Sept. 22, in the Opie hockey suites of the Student Ice Arena. Head football coach Tom Kearly will be the featured speaker. A complimentary lunch will be provided.
