CTL Kickoff Coffee Chat: Building Communities of Practice

Start the semester with a warm beverage and a fresh perspective on teaching!

Join the William G. Jackson Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) for a special kickoff event to launch our Fall Coffee Chat series. Planned on Aug. 19 from 10-11 a.m. outside Velodrome, this session will introduce the concept of Communities of Practice — informal, supportive groups where educators can connect, collaborate, and grow together.

What to Expect:

  • Opportunities to find like-minded colleagues and shared teaching interests
  • A pre-reflection activity to spark ideas and self-discovery
  • A complimentary beverage from Velodrome
  • A preview of the Fall Coffee Chat schedule — both formal and informal sessions
  • Highlights of other CTL events and offerings this semester

Whether you're new to teaching or a seasoned educator, this is a great chance to connect, reflect and kick off the semester with energy and community.

No RSVP is needed — just bring your curiosity and enjoy some great conversation!

Event Details:

  • What: CTL Kickoff Coffee Chat: Building Communities of Practice
  • When: Tuesday, Aug. 19, from 10-11 a.m.
  • Where: Outside Velodrome Coffee Co. (look for the orange conversation flag!)

Kick Off Fall Hiring at the On-Campus Jobs Expo

Career Services is hosting an on-campus jobs expo on Aug. 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge in the MUB. Students are encouraged to come check out the job opportunities available right here on campus. Many Michigan Tech departments will be represented. This is a great way to connect with students early and fill your open positions quickly. Get access to top student talent right at the start of the semester by reserving your table now!

If your department has not signed up and would like to attend, please contact Career Services at careerfair@mtu.edu.

Additionally, Career Services maintains a list of departments that frequently hire students (scroll to the bottom of the linked page). In order to help us keep the list up to date, we would greatly appreciate if departments would take a few moments to fill out our On Campus Employment 2025-26 form.

A guide with updated instructions on how to post on-campus jobs in Handshake is forthcoming! If you have questions about getting employment opportunities onto the platform, feel free to reach out to us at career@mtu.edu.

Fall MTU Aquatics: Registration Opens Tomorrow!

Registration for Session 1 of Fall 2025 Michigan Tech Aquatics programs opens tomorrow, Aug. 6, at 8 a.m.!

Explore our programs for all ages and abilities:

We’re excited to announce that beginning with fall 2025 program registration, we will be transitioning to a new recreation program registration system designed to better support our youth and family programming. As part of this upgrade, there is an important change to how you will register your child for youth programs.

Important Information for Parents/Guardians: To register your child for aquatics programs this coming fall, you’ll need to:

  1. Create your account.
  2. Add your children as your affiliates (with their date of birth).
  3. Register your child through their affiliate profile (profile options in top right corner), not your own, for any program with an age requirement (this ensures accurate participant info and correct age group placement).

Create your accounts early to be ready!

Thank you for your support as we make this exciting transition! We’re confident this new system will offer a more user-friendly and efficient experience for all.

Questions? Contact Aquatics Manager Annie Bengry at ambengry@mtu.edu or 906-487-2995.

See you at the pool!
