1. Faculty Climate Survey Sent
Last week, a new Campus Climate Survey--designed to determine the experience of students, staff and faculty regarding an inclusive and welcoming campus community--was sent out with a letter from President Glenn Mroz.

Despite a successful trial run, there was a glitch in the launching of the Faculty Climate Survey. The problem has been identified, and another letter from President Mroz, along with the Climate Survey, was sent to faculty Wednesday.

President Mroz and Chris Anderson, special assistant to the president for institutional diversity, encourage students, staff and faculty to complete the survey, so that the responses provide an accurate picture of life and work at Michigan Tech.

For questions, contact Anderson at 487-3694 or csanders@mtu.edu .

2. Youth Programs Becomes Center for Pre-college Outreach
Youth Programs will reconfigure as the Center for Pre-college Outreach.

The change reflects the growing demand for dynamic, academic, outreach programming for K-12 students, teachers, and the people in the communities they serve.

The new department will consist of five divisions:

Youth Programs
Encompasses all on-campus summer Youth Programs, including camps, as well as career and adventure explorations, scholarship programs (Women in Engineering, Engineering Scholars Program, National Summer Transportation Institute and others) and future residential programming.

MIND TREKKERS
Features innovative off-campus events and large-scale outreach initiatives meant to bring the mystery and excitement of science, technology, engineering and math to young students. MIND TREKKERS has engaged with more than 100,000 participants in the past six months, with eleven future events already scheduled.

College Access
Operates the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) and develops the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) and its local component, the Keweenaw College Access Network.

Data Collection and Assessment
Collects K-12 student data from participants in outreach efforts across campus, and ultimately creates a database for streamlined communication to students--from the cradle to college. This unit will provide outreach data to assist the campus community with grant proposals, information about available outreach models, and assistance in choosing K-12, age-appropriate outreach vehicles.

Fundraising
Initiates, cultivates, harvests and sustains partnerships with supporters, who share the same mission of pre-college outreach, and develops elementary, secondary and postsecondary education student pipelines.

The growth of outreach at Michigan Tech is a tribute to the academic departments, instructional teams and both undergraduate and graduate students. The Center for Pre-College Outreach's mission is to create, initiate and support the efforts of those in higher education who inspire youth to realize their talents, help them explore their postsecondary options, and aid them in the pursuit of their dreams.

3. Hillside Place Dedication Ceremony
Michigan Tech will celebrate the opening of Hillside Place, its newest residential apartment building, in an official dedication ceremony at 11:30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 10.

"We're gathering to celebrate the first new residential building on campus since 1968," said Travis Pierce, director of housing.

Board of Control members, architects, contractors, residence life staff and founding residents of the building will all be in attendance. The dedication will feature short remarks from prominent campus members and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Refreshments will follow. The event is open to the public.

4. Retirement Party for Tim Malette
Financial Aid will host a retirement party for Tim Malette, celebrating his 29 years of service, from 2 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 15, in Memorial Union Alumni Lounge. Faculty, staff and students are invited. There will be hors d'oeuvres and refreshments.
