1. Research Excellence Fund Call for Proposals
Proposals are being solicited for the FY2011 Research Excellence Fund (REF), an internal award of the Office of the Vice President for Research.

The announcement--which includes a program description, proposal format, submission guidelines, review criteria and procedures--is available online. A new REF category, Technology Commercialization Grants, has been added this year. For additional information, see announcement .

Incomplete proposals or those received after the deadline will not be accepted for consideration by the review committee and will be returned.

Proposals are due no later than 4 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 24, and can be submitted electronically to Laurie Stark, office assistant of Research Integrity and Compliance, at ldstark@mtu.edu . Her office is located on the third floor of the Lakeshore Center.

2. Cell Phone and Home Internet Allowance Forms Due
If you are receiving a monthly allowance through payroll for home Internet service or business cell phone use, a new allowance form must be completed for 2011 and submitted to Payroll by Friday, Dec. 17. A current detailed bill must be attached to the form, and all three signature lines must be completed.

If a new form is not received by Friday, Dec. 17, the current allowance will be terminated.

3. Flags Flown Half-Staff Today
Flags will be at half-staff today in observance of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

4. Start the New Year with GEAR
The Outdoor Adventure Program is offering a winter gear special for those who will be here over the break. All gear can be rented for the price of one week's rental. For example, a weeklong snowshoe rental is $18, and the equipment can be returned by Jan. 10.

OAP will be open during finals week from 12 to 6 p.m., Monday thru Thursday, and will be closed during winter break.

If you would like to take advantage of the OAP's low-priced gear, stop by and rent gear before Friday, Dec. 17.

5. ME-EM Graduate Seminar
Instructor Adam Loukus (ME-EM) will present "Tailored Material Properties with MMCs" at 4 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 9, in ME-EM 112. For more information, see ME-EM Graduate Seminar Series .

6. Repeated Archives Workshop

Ever wonder how to start a historical research project? Not sure where to find the right documents to answer your question? Unclear how a research archives operates? Join Michigan Tech archivists Julie Blair and Erik Nordberg for an introduction to archival research at 1 p.m., today, in Library 244.

The session will provide a general overview of research using historical records, including an introduction to historical research methods. Learn how to locate, integrate and cite archival material.

Presenters will discuss the meaning of phrases like "manuscript collection" and "primary source," how to describe different types of archival sources, and learn about the similarities and important differences between archives, libraries and museums.

Attendees will also learn how to use the Keweenaw Digital Archives to easily find historic images online, how to create an account, make a digital album, and add comments and observations to the photos.

The session will draw upon numerous examples from the holdings of the Archives, which collects historical material about the University, as well as the people, communities and industries of the surrounding Copper Country.

The library now offers weekly workshops all semester on different resources that will give you an academic edge or save you time. Workshops take place on alternate Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 1 p.m., in Library room 244. Each workshop is offered twice to accommodate class schedules.

Huskies Score 109 in Men's Hoops Win Over NMU
The men's basketball team scored 109 points in its win at Northern Michigan last Saturday (Dec. 4). Freshmen accounted for 59 of the team's 109 points. Alex Culy went 8-of-12 from 3-point range for 24 points. Austin Armga (20 points) and Jordan Reetz (15 points) also had big games. The team point total of 109 was the Huskies' highest since Feb. 4, 1993, when Tech put up 127 points against Northwood.

No. 19-Ranked Women's Basketball Beats NMU
Michigan Tech scored a 77-65 win at Northern Michigan last Saturday (Dec. 4) to continue its stranglehold on the series. The Huskies have won 14 of the last 15 games and 23 of the last 30 against the Wildcats.

Hockey to Take on WCHA Newcomer Nebraska Omaha
The hockey team will play its first-ever WCHA series against Nebraska Omaha this week. Games are Thursday and Friday, Dec. 9-10, at 8:37 p.m. (ET) both nights. The Huskies and Mavericks have played four games against each other. Tech is 2-0 all-time in Omaha, with both games coming in the 1997-98 season.
