1. Former Tech Faculty Member Inducted into Construction Hall of Fame |
The late Ed Haltenhoff, who served 15 years on the civil and environmental engineering faculty, was inducted July 29 into the Michigan Construction Hall of Fame.
The Michigan Construction Hall of Fame, located at Ferris State University, recognizes leaders in Michigan's construction industry. For more information, visit www.ferris.edu/mchof .
Charles Edwin "Ed" Haltenhoff was a soldier in World War II and received many commendations, serving in France, Belgium and Germany. After the war, he attended Lehigh University, graduating in 1951 with a degree in civil engineering.
In 1954, he was appointed project engineer for all on-site construction engineering pertaining to the foundation for the Mackinac Bridge. In 1956, he joined the Mackinac Bridge Authority as chief engineer and remained as general manager until 1965. Then he joined Elzinga and Volkers Inc., where he assumed the presidency in 1968 and was named chairman of the board in 1978.

2. Michigan Tech Picked Third in GLIAC Preseason Football Poll |
by Wes Frahm, director of athletic communications
The 2009 Michigan Tech football team has earned its highest Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll ranking in program history. The Huskies appear at third in the poll, which was released in conjunction with Monday's GLIAC Media Day Luncheon.
Tech trailed only Grand Valley State (first, 121 points) and Ashland (second, 107), both of which earned trips to the NCAA Playoffs last year. The Huskies tallied 94 points in the poll.
Wayne State and Saginaw Valley State were ranked fourth and fifth, respectively. Hillsdale, Ferris State, Indianapolis, Findlay, Northern Michigan, Northwood and Tiffin rounded out the poll in that order.
Michigan Tech has been picked higher than fifth in the league's preseason poll only once in school history--a fourth-place showing in 2005 when the team was coming off a GLIAC Championship campaign in 2004.
Head coach Tom Kearly has 19 of 24 starters returning from last year's team, which went 8-3 and finished third in the conference.
"It's nice that the other coaches in the league respect us enough to vote us third," said Kearly, who owns a 20-12 record in three seasons as head coach. "Expectations are high for this team, but we know we have our work cut out for us--especially with our early schedule."
Michigan Tech opens its season Sept. 5 at Hillsdale. The Huskies also have games against the league's top-two-ranked teams in Ashland (Sept. 12) and Grand Valley State (Sept. 26) in the first four weeks of the season. |

3. Contract Dates and Pay Dates Out of Sync for Faculty, Pay Backed Up One Week |
submitted by Human Resources
Michigan Tech is addressing a disconnect between faculty contract and payroll dates by essentially paying some faculty a week in advance, according to Anita Quinn, director of human resources.
Contract dates for faculty will be out of sync with the payroll dates again for the academic year 2009-10.
This year Labor Day falls on Sept. 7, and as per Senate proposal 21-03 ( www.sas.it.mtu.edu/usenate/propose/03/21-03.htm ), fall semester classes will begin on Aug. 31. This year the faculty contracts begin on Aug. 17.
This shift also means the contract dates begin in the middle of a biweekly pay cycle. To accommodate faculty who have elected to have their salary paid evenly over 26 biweekly pays, the on-payroll date will be backed up one week, resulting in faculty being paid one week in advance and ending one week earlier at the end of spring semester 2010.
Faculty contract dates for 2009-10 are Aug. 17, 2009, through May 7, 2010. Payroll start and end dates are Aug. 9, 2009, and May 1, 2010.
Faculty earning summer salary the week of Aug. 17 will have that amount added to their biweekly pay on their Aug. 28 check, which could result in three weeks of pay.
Faculty who have elected 19 pays will receive their last check on May 7, 2010, which will fulfill the contractual amount due for 2009-10.
Faculty who elected 26 pays for the 2009-10 year will receive their last check on Aug. 13, 2010.
The University will continue to work on a resolution for matching contract and pay end dates in the future. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Payroll Services at 487-2130. |
