1. Tech-Talks SFHI: "Energy--Conversion, Generation, Storage, Transfer"
The Tech-Talks SFHI series will start on Tuesday, March 17, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Memorial Union Red Metal Room 105. This is the first of three Tech-Talks that focus on the Strategic Faculty Hiring Initiative.

There will be a cash bar--with the first pop, wine or beer on the house--and munchies will also be provided.

The SFHI proposal on the topic of energy will be presented and discussed at the first Tech-Talks SFHI session. A 30-minute presentation will be made on the proposal, followed by time for questions and discussion.

The SFHI proposal, presentation and discussion will focus on the following questions.

* How does the initiative further the goals of the strategic plan?

* What is current and future market demand and need for the initiative?

* What is our current position with regard to this area?

* What is the competition in this area? (who? what? where?)

* After we invest in this initiative, where will we be positioned relative to the previous questions?

The three Tech-Talks SFHI sessions will provide information on the proposed topics prior to a period of campus feedback from March 18 to April 7.

All faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend the session and participate in the discussions. For more information about this session or the submission of pre-proposals for future SFHI focus areas, contact the Provost’s Office.

The Tech-Talks Research series is sponsored by the Provost’s Office and the Office of the Vice President for Research.

2. REMINDER: Union Closed for Law Enforcement Officer Training This Afternoon
Law enforcement officers from Houghton and Keweenaw Counties will use the Memorial Union this afternoon to practice their response to incidents of active violence. The MUB will be closed from 2:30 to 10 p.m.

There will be two training sessions run by the Michigan State Police. The first begins at 3 p.m. and the second at 7 p.m. A third session will be held at Houghton Elementary School on Thursday, March 12.

Law enforcement participants will deal with several scenarios, including active use of a firearm. Only blank ammunition will be used, but it may sound as though shots are being fired.

State Police Trooper Bill Witt will lead the training exercises, which were scheduled during spring break to cause the least possible disruption on campus.

3. Gear Up for Golf, Affordably
Did you realize an annual pass for Portage Lake Golf Course for 2009 can be purchased for the equivalent of less than three 18-hole rounds per month at the regular greens fee rate?

If you plan on playing at least once a week from mid-April to mid- October, you would be saving over $300 by purchasing a season pass. Include the amenities of guest passes, merchandise and tournament discounts, complimentary pull carts, as well as free play at other courses, and the value of a season pass can save you as much as $500. The savings are even better for spouses and children.

You can save $25 to $100 by sending in your application before April 1. A reminder, children 11 years and younger play for free when accompanied by an adult pass holder. However, should the child wish to play without mom or dad, he or she will either have to purchase green fees or a season pass.

Short of a season pass, there are various other payment plans. Purchase a 10-play, 18-hole par card for $290 or a 10-play, nine-hole par card for $195. Par cards come in five options as well. For par cards, gift certificates or other services, email or call the golf course.

A 2009 season pass application is available online. Golfers can also purchase their pass online at www.golf.mtu.edu , by emailing golfcourse@mtu.edu , or by calling 487-2641. The Pro Shop has applications, too.

The Pro Shop will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, beginning March 16. It would be best to call ahead and make an appointment prior to that date.

Our Par and Grill is now a full-service establishment and will host our annual Master’s Party from 1 to 6 p.m., Sunday, April 12. Complimentary snacks, drink specials, putting contests and raffles will be a part of the celebration. Come to Portage Lake and enjoy the final round of the 2009 Masters Tournament.

"Join Portage Lake today and be a part of the exciting 2009 season," says Mark Maroste, golf course manager.

4. Learn about Renewable Green Energy
Wind? Solar? Running water? Biofuels? Find out which renewable energy sources are choices for home heating and electricity.

"Renewable Green Energy in the UP" will be the topic of a family program from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Monday, March 16, in the community room of the Portage Lake District Library in Houghton.

This is the second program in the Energy Education Series, which is coordinated by the Western Upper Peninsula Center for Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education; Michigan Tech’s Center for Science and Environmental Outreach; and the Copper Country and Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School Districts.

TJ Brown, outreach coordinator for Northern Options Energy Center in Marquette, will engage children and adults in learning about renewable energy options. Brown has expertise in residential energy efficiency, energy savings and green home construction.

Following the half-hour presentation, children and adults can investigate alternative energy choices, including making windmills and water wheels, measuring wind speed, comparing solar gain, and designing a well insulated home.

For more information, contact the library at 482-4570 and either Joan Chadde or Lloyd Wescoat at 487-3341. Library events and presentations are free and open to the public.

Funding for the program is provided by the Michigan Energy Office and Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO). Find out more at www.wupcenter.mtu.edu .
