Via C-SPAN, Courtesy of Internet
submitted by Brenda Helminen, director, Telecommunications
If you are planning on tuning into some of the Inaugural ceremonies over the Internet on Tuesday, you can watch C-SPAN’s coverage of the ceremonies at www.i2-multicast.northwestern.edu/ . Or you can watch a unicast web stream of the ceremonies at http://inaugural.senate.gov/ . Coverage will begin at 6 a.m.
Since Michigan Tech is a member of Internet2 and our network is multicast-enabled, this first link should provide a high-definition, low-jitter experience without overly taxing Michigan Tech's off-campus network link.

LADIES WIN TWICE BY A COMBINED THREE POINTS
The Michigan Tech women's basketball team won both its games last week by a combined three points. The 15th-ranked Huskies received a layup from Lisa Staehlin with less than a second left to upset No. 4 Hillsdale 54-52 on the road Thursday (Jan. 15). Tech then avoided upset at Findlay Saturday (Jan. 17) when Katie Zimmerman made two free throws with nine seconds to go in a 71-70 decision. Michigan Tech is 13-2 overall and 10-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The 10-0 league start is the second-best in school history, trailing only the 1992-93 team's 11-0 opening to conference play.
FOUR STRAIGHT HOME GAMES COMING FOR BASKETBALL
The Michigan Tech basketball teams will play their next four games at home beginning Thursday (Jan. 22) vs. Saginaw Valley State. Tipoff will be 5:30 p.m. for the women's game and 7:30 p.m. for the men's. Tech will also host Upper Peninsula rival Lake Superior State this Saturday (Jan. 24). The Huskies-Lakers men's game could potentially be for first place in the GLIAC North Division as Tech currently trails LSSU by a game in the standings.
HOCKEY WITH A TIE VS. NORTH DAKOTA; HEADING TO ALASKA
Michigan Tech's hockey team skated to a 3-3 overtime tie against North Dakota at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena last Friday (Jan. 16). 4. Western U.P. Center Coordinating Sherlock "Homes" Energy-Saving Workshops |
Learn how to become a Sherlock "Homes" energy detective and search for clues to energy waste in your home from 6:30-8:00 p.m., Monday, Jan. 26, in the community room of the Portage Lake District Library in Houghton. What you will learn about home energy efficiency and conservation can lead to significant savings, some of it with little or no up-front cost.
Following the 40-minute presentation, several activity stations will be set up for children and families, including measuring energy use of different household items using a Kill-a-Watt meter, testing insulation properties of different materials, comparing the light and heat produced by a regular light bulb and an energy-saving light bulb and more.
This is the first of four programs in the Energy Education Series at the Portage Lake District Library, coordinated by the Western Upper Peninsula Center for Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education and Michigan Tech, with funding from the Michigan Energy Office and Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO). The January-April calendar of energy education programs is posted at www.wupcenter.mtu.edu . |

submitted by Visual and Performing Arts
Warm your winter body and soul with some hot jazz at the Jazz Club Cabaret this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 23 and 24, starting at 7:30 p.m. in McArdle Theater (Walker Arts and Humanities Center).

Jaztec continues in their great tradition of jazz standards and contemporary jazz, with their own unique creative twist. Momentum will be performing some of the deepest grooves and funkiest tunes in the area.
Irish promises, "The atmosphere is great, the jazz is hot, and the vibe is relaxing." McArdle Theater will feature cabaret seating at tables, and concessions are available.

"Copyfight!" a lecture by English technology journalist Danny O’Brien ( www.oblomovka.com ), will be held Friday, Jan. 23, at 5 p.m. in the Rozsa Center as part of its "Intellectual Property Controversies" series.
O'Brien has written weekly columns for the Sunday Times, the Irish Times and The Guardian, and helped The Guardian formulate its online strategy. He worked for the UK edition of Wired, as well as for Channel 4 and the British ISP Virgin.net. Together with Dave Green, he founded and wrote the now-defunct email newsletter Need To Know. In May 2005, he succeeded Ren Bucholz as activist coordinator for the Electronic Frontier Foundation ( www.eff.org/wp/osp ).
He is currently the EFF's International outreach coordinator. Its settlement with Sony/BMG, the MGM vs. Grokster decision by the US Supreme Court, and the cases surrounding Diebold have earned the advocacy organization considerable attention.
O'Brien also set up a pledge on PledgeBank to help establish "an organization that will campaign for digital rights in the UK," which led to the creation of the Open Rights Group.
Originally from London, he resides in San Francisco. He holds a degree in philosophy, politics and economics from Oxford.
On Saturday, Jan. 24, at 5 p.m., Assitant Professor David Orozco (SBE), presents his lecture “The Shape of Things to Come: Nontraditional Trademarks, from the iPod to the Chippendale Dancers" ( http://works.bepress.com/david_orozco/ ). Prior to joining the School of Business and Economics, Orozco was a research fellow at the Center for Research in Technology and Innovation at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. His trademark research has been funded by the Marketing Science Institute and featured in The Wall Street Journal. His discussions of nontraditional trademarks were also featured in the radio show "As it Happens."
On Friday, Jan. 23, at 7:30 p.m., O'Brien and Orozco will join fellow panelists Kembrew McLeod and Molly Kleinman and moderator Michael Bennett for a four-person panel discussion which is sure to be both highly informative and entertaining.
