1. Alumni Provide Unique Equipment to Michigan Tech Combustion Lab |
by Jennifer Donovan, public relations director
Michael Uhl '96 and Jerry Pospiech '95 credit Michigan Tech with providing them a life-changing education that enabled them to secure leadership positions at A & D Technology Inc., an Ann Arbor-based firm that manufactures a unique software-hardware data acquisition and control system.
So when Pospiech and Uhl heard about Tech's Alternative Energy Research Building (AERB) and the combustion laboratory that mechanical engineering-engineering mechanics professor Jeff Naber is developing there, they found the perfect way to give back to their alma mater. A & D Technology is providing the data acquisition and control system--a vital piece of equipment--to the combustion lab at a deep discount.
It's a win-win situation for Michigan Tech and for A & D, Naber said.
"The system will control and monitor the entire combustion lab," he explained. "In essence, it is the central brain of the laboratory. It will enable real-time monitoring and process control of all aspects of the laboratory, integrating a number of instruments. It will enable us to develop highly customized tests that will greatly expand the capability of the laboratory while realizing the full potential of the data acquisition and control system."
The AERB installation will be the first time A & D's monitoring and control system is used in a stand-alone, non-rotating combustion vessel.
Pospiech and Uhl said they are extremely pleased to be able to play a key role in helping Michigan Tech "push the envelope on alternative energy."
The data acquisition and control system is being installed this month in the AERB in Hancock. The combustion lab will be up and running in early 2009. |
