2. SFI Annual Poster Session, Banquet Nov. 7
submitted by the Sustainable Futures Institute

The Sustainable Futures Institute will hold its Fourth Annual SFI Poster Session and Banquet on Friday, Nov. 7, in the Horner Lobby of the Rozsa Center. A poster session open to the public will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

All faculty and students associated with SFI are invited, including official members of SFI, people on the SFI email list, those involved in projects under the auspices of SFI, scholars of SFI and all poster presenters.

This annual event celebrates the year's accomplishments and strengthens the network of scholars interested in furthering sustainability research, education and outreach at Michigan Tech and beyond.

The Sustainable Futures Institute will be celebrating many sustainability events at Michigan Tech, including the designation of Michigan Tech as Michigan's first Center for Energy Excellence; a $1.2-million award for a collaborative materials research project; a successful student trip to Bolivia to research water-related projects; the launching of the new D80 Center to address sustainability issues in underdeveloped countries; and Michigan Tech's new Great Lakes Research Lab to research freshwater issues.

The event will open with the public showing of posters that represent a broad range of sustainability projects and research, not only by SFI participants, but also by graduate and undergraduate students and members of the campus and the community. SFI encourages everyone to stop by during this time to see the kinds of exciting projects taking place on campus and to vote for the Best of Show winner. SFI wishes to thank the generous support of the Graduate Student Council for organizing this poster event. Following the public viewing, SFI will host a reception for SFI participants from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The banquet follows at 6:30 p.m., during which this year's new scholars of SFI will be inducted. Other special guests at the banquet include SFI's advisory board members representing SFI's partners from Caterpillar Inc., Dow Corning, General Motors, Kimberly Clark, the Great Lakes Commission, Los Alamos National Laboratory of the Department of Energy, Nelson Mandela School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs at Southern University and A&M College and the USDA Forest Service.

The banquet will feature sustainable, local food prepared by Executive Chef Eric Karvonen.

Please reserve your place at the banquet by Friday, Oct. 31, with Melanie Yang at xunayang@mtu.edu . SFI regrets it cannot accommodate significant others.

5. Pop-Punk Band Relient K Hits the Rozsa Monday
submitted by the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts

They've been climbing the pop-punk and Contemporary Christian music charts since they appeared on the music scene in 1998. Now, fresh off their "Uncle Fest Tour," Relient K (yes, named after the car) hits the stage at the Rozsa Center on Monday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m.

Their fifth and most highly acclaimed album, "Five Score And Seven Years Ago," has brought the band not only its highest measurable success--debuting at number six on the US Billboard 200 chart--but has also made them very in-demand on the touring circuit. To date, the band has sold over 2 million records, with three albums having been awarded Gold certification by the RIAA. Their upbeat energy, quirky mix of light and dark humor, and honest, resonant lyrics reflect a positive attitude with no "preachiness" and give the band strong crossover appeal with mainstream pop-punk and alternative rock fans, obvious when they perform alongside secular artists. Says front man Matt Thiessen, "I always write about what I'm going through, and I can't avoid the fact that I'm just really happy and there are some good things going on. I really love to not be serious all the time, even when I am being serious."

The band's musical influences are many and varied: The Beach Boys, Rufus Wainwright, Blink 182, Keane, Fountains of Wayne and The Thrills, among others. The band has also been featured in a number of high-profile tours (Vans Warped, MxPx) and television appearances ("The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," MTV's "TRL"). Yet Matt Thiessen (vocals/guitar/piano) takes it all in stride, suggesting that the band still hasn't broke big.

Their opening band, House of Heroes (also just off the "Uncle Fest Tour"), has seen its own following grow. The band got its start in 2002, when the three original members reformed their old punk band (then known as "No Tagbacks") and changed their name to reflect the band's fresh start with new music and a new perspective. They released "What You Want Is Now," their first album, in 2003.

Catch both bands for the price of one on Monday, Nov. 3, 7:30 p.m. at the Rozsa Center.

This event is sponsored by the Michigan Tech Student Entertainment Board with funding from the Student Activity Fee, the MUB Board and the Michigan Tech Parent's Fund.

Tickets for the general public are $25 and $20; Tech student prices are $20 and $15 (ID required). To purchase tickets, contact the Rozsa Box Office at 487-3200 or visit http://tickets.mtu.edu . No refunds, exchanges or late seating, please.

John Keating wrote a feature, "What's Going on at Michigan Tech University and Mont Ripley?" that appears in the Education Issue of "The Central Line," a publication of the Professional Ski Instructors Association. He remembers his experiences administering an exam as part of the ski instructor course. He concludes,"The skiing world will be a much better place because places like Michigan Tech University and the Mont Ripley Snowsports School are composed of a group of dedicated individuals who will make an impace on the snowsports industry for years to come."
