2. Tech Trails Continue to Improve |
by Dennis Walikainen, senior editor
That noise you hear in the woods adjacent to campus is a good thing.
Trees are being cleared in the project to connect the Michigan Tech Trails with the Nara Trails at the Nara Nature Park. Approximately 7-1/2 kilometers of new trails are being created this summer and will result in a trail system of more than 30 kilometers. The trailhead at the Nara Park will feature a chalet with a stone fireplace, restrooms and showers.
Funding to create the trails comes entirely from proceeds of the timber harvest, which is being managed by the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science and a gift from local philanthropists. "We're extremely grateful to Bob and Ruth Nara for their vision of community recreation," says Mike Abbott, director of sports and recreation, "and for their willingness to put significant financial resources behind their ideas."
The timber harvest began this week and should be completed in about four weeks. Trail construction will start as soon as the harvest is complete and should be done by mid-October. The Michigan Tech Trails are groomed by Jeff Parker and Jim Meese. |

3. Women's Basketball Boasts Nation's Second-best GPA |
by Wes Frahm, director of athletic marketing and communications
The Michigan Tech women's basketball team earned the second-best grade point average of any NCAA Division II women's basketball program, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association has announced. This is the second straight season the Huskies have ranked among the top five of the nearly 300 teams nationwide; they were fourth a year ago.
Michigan Tech boasted a team GPA of 3.639, which trailed by just a hundredth of a point to South Dakota's 3.649.
"I'm extremely proud of the team and what they've accomplished in the classroom," said head coach John Barnes. "It means even more that they won a conference regular season title and tournament championship."
Tech posted a 23-8 overall record in 2007-08 and claimed both the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division title and tournament championship. The Huskies also qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the third time under Coach Barnes. |

4. Palmgren Earns Academic All-American Honors |
by Wes Frahm, director of athletic marketing and communications
Michigan Tech women's tennis player Amy Palmgren has been selected to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large Second Team picked by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The Huskies' number one singles player has now earned Academic All-America honors twice—she was an at-large third team honoree last year.
A total of 45 student-athletes were selected to Academic All-America First, Second and Third Teams (15 to each team) from a national pool of candidates that included all non-NCAA Division I female student-athletes in the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo.
Palmgren posted a 14-9 overall record in 2007-08, including a 12-8 record at number one singles. The team captain also compiled a 10-5 doubles record to help Michigan Tech to its third-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The four-time All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection earned a 4.0 cumulative GPA in computer engineering.
To qualify for a nomination, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore, have a minimum 3.20 cumulative GPA, and be a starter or top reserve. |
