1. Reminder: Fellowships Available for Grad Students in Engineering or Related Field
The Graduate School is accepting nominations for the 2008-09 Charles DeVlieg Foundation Graduate Fellowships. Each graduate program may nominate one MS and one PhD student. Only US citizens are eligible.

Nominations are due to Debra Charlesworth in the Graduate School by 4 p.m. on Friday, July 25. A complete description of the materials required for nomination can be found at www.admin.mtu.edu/urel/ttoday/previous.php?issue=20080625&id=5799&nav=1#5 .

2. Presentation July 24 on Tips and Tricks for Writing Your Thesis or Dissertation
Graduate students, faculty and staff are invited to "Tips and Tricks for Writing Your Thesis or Dissertation," to be held Thursday, July 24, at 2 p.m.

The presenter is Debra Charlesworth, from the Graduate School. Among the topics are helping students organize their time, staying motivated and using their word processor more efficiently.

Space is limited. The event will be taped and available as a streaming presentation.

3. Flags Flown at Half-staff Tomorrow
Flags will be flown at half-staff tomorrow, Friday, July 18, in honor of Army Sgt. 1st Class Steven J. Chevalier, of Flint.

4. Reminder: Lunch and Learn Today on Kindergarten Readiness
submitted by the Benefits Office

Caroline Penny-Simpson, from Little Huskies Child Development Center, will present great ideas for helping parents develop appropriate activities that support kindergarten readiness at the next lunch and learn, to be held today, Thursday, July 17, noon-1 p.m. in Memorial Union Alumni Lounge A.

A take-home packet providing ideas for activities at home will be distributed. There will also be an opportunity to win great prizes that help to apply techniques discussed during the lunch and learn. Hope to see you there.

5. Day Hike in the Porcupine Mountains Saturday with OAP
Join the Outdoor Adventure Program for a day hike in the Porcupine Mountains on Saturday, July 19. Participants will meet at the OAP Rental Center in the Memorial Union at 9 a.m.

Cost is $25 with a Michigan Tech ID and $35 for the general public. OAP will provide transportation, a lunch and a guide to lead the way. This is a great way to get out and explore, without spending a lot on gas.

6. New Staff
Connie L. Scott has joined the Office of Development as a major gifts officer. Scott was previously employed as advertising director at The Daily Press newspaper in Escanaba. She also has experience in banking and retail. She is married to Michael and lives in Houghton. Scott is originally from Marquette and previously worked and lived in Appleton, Wisc., in addition to Escanaba.

Jim Baker, technology and economic development director, is featured in a Detroit Free Press article on how colleges are helping the state economy. The Grand Rapids Press ran a travel/research story on Isle Royale and its famous wolves and moose, including quotes from Public Relations Director Jennifer Donovan.

9. Fume Hood for Sale in ATDC
The Advanced Technology Development Complex is selling a Labconco 8-foot, floor-mounted Protector XL fume hood, in very good condition. The fume hood is five years old, gray and features the following:

• two interior covered lights
• two ventilation ports designed for 10-inch duct hookup
• four tempered glass sliding doors
• gas connection hookup
