1. Bornhorst Receives Award for Contributions to Lake Superior Geology |
Professor Ted Bornhorst, Seaman Mineral Museum director, was recently awarded the prestigious Goldich Award from the Institute on Lake Superior Geology.
The award, the institute's highest honor, is granted annually to one recipient for outstanding contributions to Lake Superior geology. The award is named after the late Sam Goldich, an internationally recognized geologist who worked extensively in the Lake Superior region.
The Institute on Lake Superior Geology is a nonprofit professional society with the objectives of providing a forum for exchange of geological ideas and scientific data and promoting better understanding of the geology of the Lake Superior region.
Bornhorst received the Goldich Medal for 2008 at the 54th Annual Meeting of the Institute on Lake Superior Geology.
"As a token of the institute's appreciation, it is altogether fitting and appropriate that Ted join the ranks of other prominent Lake Superior geologists who have been honored with this prestigious award," said Jim Miller, professor at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
Miller cited Bornhorst for his "impressive resume of academic contributions" and for "his unparalleled service to the institute over the past 25 years." |

2. Company Expansions Fill MTEC SmartZone |
submitted by SmarZone
MTEC SmartZone has announced that two new tenants have entered its SmartZone business incubator.
Extreme Tool & Engineering Inc. has opened a research and development center, an expansion of its headquarters in Wakefield, and Hawk Technologies Inc. has more than tripled its footprint from its prior facility in order to pursue new product development. Since the recent expansions of SmartZone companies, the facility is completely occupied for the first time since its opening in July 2005.
Extreme Tool & Engineering has opened its SmartZone research and development office to help create new value-added products for its customers. While the company's facilities in Wakefield are dedicated to manufacturing and tooling, the Hancock facility is dedicated to product design and development.
"The proximity to industrial design sources from Finlandia and engineering resources from Michigan Tech make the new location ideal for a wide range of products and markets. This combination allows Extreme to provide full plastic product development services from initial idea to molded parts in your hand," said Michael Zacharias, president of Extreme Tool & Engineering.
In April, Extreme Tool & Engineering was recognized by Governor Jennifer Granholm and the Edward Lowe Foundation as one of the "2008 Michigan 50 Companies to Watch" at the Michigan Celebrates Small Business Entrepreneurial Awards in Lansing. Extreme Tool & Engineering expects its Hancock operation to support up to 10 positions within the next three years.
Hawk Technologies Inc. is entering the SmartZone incubator facility to expand its capabilities in research, engineering and product design.
From its new offices, Hawk can better serve its clients in the aerospace, automotive, manufacturing and military industries.
"This expansion to the SmartZone provides Hawk with the environment we need at this transitional phase in growing our business. In addition to expanding our contract engineering work, we have two patents pending along with several other products in
our development pipeline to introduce to significant world markets," said Dorothy Ruohonen, president of Hawk Technologies.
Hawk Technologies plans to staff up to 15 positions during the next three years.
With the two companies entering the Portage Campus Building, MTEC
SmartZone finds its Hancock facilities filled to capacity. According to Program Manager Jonathan Leinonen, "Just about all of the SmartZone companies are experiencing significant growth this year."
Other tenants planning to expand include Consistacom, The LaSalle Technology Group, SWH Consulting and Up & Running Systems Services.
"In this sense, we are providing scalable space, which was the very intention of the incubator. As companies are maturing, we help them look ahead to the next step, both in terms of space and programs to sustain companies at each phase of growth," said Carlton Crothers, CEO of MTEC SmartZone. "Because of the growth and demand for incubator space, we are currently looking into creating another facility for companies in the Houghton-Hancock area." |
