2. Help Welcome New Students: Volunteer for Move-in Aug. 23 |
by Les Cook, vice president for student affairs
Welcoming new students and their families to campus is one of the most exciting and energizing times of the year. In keeping with the tradition we began a few years ago, we invite all faculty and staff to help welcome our new students in August during move-in. Any and all assistance is welcomed. Take advantage of this opportunity to meet new students and their families, carry a case of Mountain Dew or two, and help them get settled into their new home at Tech.
To volunteer, please email movein2008@mtu.edu by Monday, June 16.
In your response, please indicate
1. your shift preferences on Saturday, Aug. 23:
• 10 a.m.-noon;
• noon-2 p.m.; or
• 2-4 p.m.
2. how you would like to help:
• move-in helper (by far our greatest need);
• lobby greeter; or
• hospitality host (serving water and lemonade).
3. your T-shirt size.
As a small thank you for your time and effort, we will provide you with a special “Welcome Crew” T-shirt to wear during move-in. Thank you in advance for your support and participation. Please join us as we welcome these new students and their families to the Michigan Tech community. |

10. New Staff |
Jacob P. Emerick has joined the staff of Auxiliary Technologies as an application programmer. Emerick is a newly graduated Michigan Tech student who has been employed in website development, graphic design and project management, not to mention lawn care and pig farming (really, he didn't think they were worthy of mention, but we do). He holds a BS in Mathematics, with a concentration in applied and computational math and minors in journalism and communication and culture. He lives in Houghton, has previously been involved in student groups and campus policy/committee discussions, enjoys Frank Herbert (writer of the Dune series and other sci-fi), and is a PC enthusiast.
Cody J. Kangas has joined the staff of Education Opportunity as coordinator of youth programs. Before coming to Michigan Tech, Kangas worked with Ann Arbor Rec and Ed as a youth sports supervisor. For the past three months, he has worked as the assistant coordinator of Gear-Up at Tech. Kangas served as the varsity boys' basketball head coach at Hancock High School, interned and worked for the US Olympic water polo team, and has extensive experience with other summer youth programs. In April 2007, he graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in Sport Management, from the Division of Kinesiology. He is engaged to Christina Johnson and lives in Hancock. He says, "I'm very excited to jump on board at Michigan Tech, and I'm eager to get my feet wet and continue the success of SYP!" |
